Easy Reindeer Snack for Kindergarten

December can be such a magical time in the kindergarten classroom. It’s so fun to make special memories with students during their first year of elementary school! One way that I have always liked to add seasonal fun to the classroom is with themed treats. In this post, I’m going to share an easy reindeer snack for kindergarten that’s perfect for December!

How to Make a Fun Reindeer Snack

This themed treat is something you could make ahead of time as a special surprise for your class. You could also have a parent volunteer make the base for the snack and then bring them to class for students to decorate. You could also go through the whole process of preparing the snacks with your students throughout the school day.

No matter how you decide to make this reindeer snack, your students are going to love having a delicious holiday treat and the special memory that goes with it.

Step One: Gather Ingredients

The first step is to gather everything you’ll need for this treat. Here’s what you’ll need to make this reindeer treat for (or with) your students:

That’s it for the ingredients! You’ll also need to have the bowl, spatula, and pan needed to make the Rice Krispies Treats.

Step Two: Make the Rice Krispies Treats

Use the chocolate cereal, butter, and marshmallows to make regular Rice Krispies Treats. The recipe is usually on the box. (If not, you can find it here.) You can press the treats into a larger pan (like a rimmed cookie sheet) if you want them to be a little thinner for your young students. Just make sure they’re thick enough to handle the decorations!

Step Three: Cut the Treats

Once the treats have had a chance to cool and get set, it’s time to cut them into triangles. Each triangle will be the face of a reindeer, so you can plan the size accordingly.

Step Four: Decorate

Now it’s time to decorate the reindeer treat! Set the triangle treat on a plate or paper towel with the point facing down. Using drops of icing as glue, add one pretzel to each of the top corners of the triangle to create the reindeer antlers. Then you can add the candy eyes and a red M&M for the nose with icing, as well. (If you don’t have candy eyes, you can use a different color of M&M candies for the eyes instead.)

Step Five: Enjoy!

You can give students the chance to eat their reindeer treats at school or bag them up to take home. (You could even have them put their treats in a paper bag reindeer craft!) Either way, the reindeer treat will be a special kindergarten memory for your students.

When to Make a Reindeer Treat

There are many different ways that you can incorporate a reindeer treat into your December lesson plans. Here are a few ideas:

  • Kindergarten Buddies: Do you have a buddy classroom from an older grade level? Or maybe even a neighboring classroom? Making and eating these reindeer treats could be a fun activity to do together during a December visit.
  • Classroom Party: Are you putting together a classroom holiday party for your students? Making and eating the reindeer treat would be a perfect addition to your party! You could either do it as a whole-group activity or have it be a rotation where an adult works with a smaller number of students. You could then set the completed treats aside and eat them all together at the end of the party.
  • Thematic Unit: It’s always fun to have a treat that corresponds with the themed learning that’s happening in the classroom. If you’re planning a variety of holiday or reindeer activities for your students, you can top it off with a reindeer treat! This is a great way to review vocabulary that they might have learned during your thematic unit
