Activities Included in Printable Number Books

If you’re looking for engaging activities to help your students practice number identification, counting, and more, printable number books are a great option!  Each number is featured in its own easy-to-assemble booklet that students can complete during morning work, math stations, small group practice, and more!

Rainbow Writing

The first page gives students the chance to practice number formation in a fun way!  Students can practice writing both the number and number word in the colors of the rainbow, one at a time.

Students have so much fun creating the rainbow, they don’t even realize that they’re hard at work!

Find and Color

To practice number recognition, the next page has students find and color the focus number according to the key.

Coloring popcorn kernels with the number 8

This page has a different theme for each number, so students are always excited to open the book and see what they’ll be coloring!

Number Sense

The next activity helps students build their number sense by representing the number in different ways.  First, they will practice holding up the correct number of fingers.  The number book has an example for students to reference as they practice.

Next, students will model the number by coloring in the correct number of boxes in a ten frame.  In order to build a strong foundation of number sense for future math concepts, it’s important for students to become familiar with ten frames!

Finally, students can practice making tally marks to represent the number.  This is great practice with one-to-one correspondence!

Color, Trace, and Write

Another fun way for students to practice one-to-one correspondence is to color and count the correct number of objects needed to finish a picture.  Each number book has a different picture, which will keep students engaged in number practice. For example, one book has students draw spikes on a dinosaur while another has them draw raindrops.

Once they finish their pictures, students can trace and write the numeral and number word on the bottom half of the page.

Find and Color Groups

Students can continue their counting practice by finding groups of the focus number. This page has several boxes with different objects for students to count.

After counting a group of objects, students can color the happy face if it has the correct number of objects and the sad face if it does not.

Find and Color Number Identification

After learning about different ways to represent the focus number, students can put that knowledge to work!  The next page of the printable number book is a color by code activity.

Students will look for different representations of the focus number, including the number word, ten frame, dice, fingers, and tally marks. Students will follow the code to color each box in order to reveal the picture.  They’re always so excited to see the final product!

Number Word Reading

Finally, this printable number book can be used to practice reading the number word within sentences.  The back cover of the book has several sentences that use the number word in a predictable pattern, along with visual cues.

Students can trace the number word at the top before reading each sentence.  They’ll love to become detectives and go on a word hunt for the number words in each sentence!  They can use a crayon to circle the number word in each sentence and then to color the illustration.

When to Use Number Booklets

Other than the coloring activities that have a different theme for each number book, the format is consistent between the books.  This means that, once students have learned the routine of tasks for each book, they will be able to complete these activities with minimal support.  This is a great way to build independence!

Morning Work: These booklets are a great way to ease into a day of learning!  Students can work on the pages of their number books after getting settled at their seats each morning.

Math Centers:  Number books can also be added to a station during math centers time.  Since students can get right to work with minimal reminders from you, this is a great activity to use when you’re working with other small groups during math stations.

Small Groups:  Speaking of small groups, these number books can be used for extra practice with numbers during your small group instruction.
