An important part of a student’s kindergarten year is practicing new skills outside of the classroom. In this post, I’m going to share some November home activities for kindergarten that make it easy for students to add extra practice to their daily routine.

The Importance of At-Home Practice
There are many reasons why practicing skills at home is so beneficial for kindergarten students:
- Build a School-to-Home Connection: When parents can regularly see what their students are learning at school, it makes them feel more connected to what’s going on in the classroom.
- Helps Students Generalize Knowledge: An important part of learning a new skill is being able to generalize that knowledge to different settings. When students are practicing a skill at home, it opens the door to some of that generalization.
- Support Students During Breaks: When students have things to work on at home, it can help them keep their skills sharp during long breaks from school. This is especially important as the holiday season quickly approaches!
November Home Activities for Kindergarten
Even though it’s clear that practicing skills at home can be beneficial for kindergarteners, it can be challenging to find engaging and developmentally-appropriate activities to send home with students. Here are three seasonal resources that you can use to encourage students to practice a variety of skills at home during the month of November.
1. Digital Activities for November
We know that students love to unwind from a day at school with some screen time at home! That’s why I created some engaging digital activities that kindergarteners love. These digital centers are full of engaging seasonal activities that can incorporate learning while still allowing students to have some digital fun.

Students can practice literacy skills that they learned during the first couple of months of school. For example, they can practice their letter identification skills by matching uppercase and lowercase letters using this Thanksgiving-themed activity. They can also practice building CVC words by choosing letters that match a picture on the pirate turkey’s treasure chest. The more practice that students get with literacy skills, the more confident readers they will become!

Digital centers can also include some fun seasonal math practice! For example, students can drag and drop numbered feathers onto a turkey in the correct order. They can also practice comparing quantities as they add the correct number of pepperonis to pizza slices, then drag and drop the correct labels below each slice. These are both great ways to help students improve their number sense and build a strong foundation for future math instruction.

2. November Homework
Homework doesn’t have to be boring! You can use fun seasonal worksheets to help students practice literacy and math skills at home. This print-and-go November homework includes a variety of turkey and Thanksgiving-themed activities to get students excited about practicing math and literacy skills at home.

Students can practice their phonemic awareness and letter identification skills by listening for ending sounds. They can identify the picture on each turkey feather and color the ones that have an ending sound that matches the letter on the turkey.

An example of a fun math activity that students can do at home is this counting by 10s activity! Students will cut and paste the tens in order on the page by putting the correct pilgrim hat on each turkey.
In addition to the literacy and math practice, the coloring, cutting, and pasting is excellent fine motor practice for students. The more opportunities that students have to improve their hand strength and coordination, the better!

3. Turkey Games
One of my favorite ways to encourage skill practice at home is with fun learning games. When students can interact with their siblings or parents while practicing important skills, it’s a win-win! I have two fun turkey games that are easy to print and send home with students.

The first is a beginning sounds practice game. Students will put playing cards face down on the table or in a bag. They will then choose a card, identify the picture on the card, and then listen for the beginning sound in that word as they say it. Once they have figured out the beginning sound, they will look on their turkey game mat for the letter that represents that beginning sound. When they have found the correct letter, they will place a candy or small token over the letter on the turkey feather. The game will continue until all of the turkey feathers have been filled!

Students can also review math concepts with a similar game! Students will take turns rolling a die, counting the dots on the die, and then adding the correct candy color to the turkey feathers based on the key. Students always love to predict which feather will get filled in first!
This activity provides great subitizing practice, since students will get many chances to identify the numbers on a 6-sided die. They will have so much fun, they won’t even realize they’re working hard on their number sense skills!
