You just need the printable game mats and a few additional supplies to have some turkey fun in your classroom! The rules are simple, so students can easily play these games with a partner or independently. The best part is that these games are free to download!

Roll and Build Turkey Game for Kindergarten

The first turkey game is a great way to help students practice counting as well as color identification.

Adding candy to a turkey game mat

In this game, students work to build a turkey’s feathers by covering all of the empty spaces on the mat. Each color corresponds to a number that students will roll on a die. After rolling the number, students will use the key on the mat to add a small candy or manipulative to the corresponding feather. As the feathers fill up, the suspense builds as students wait for just the right number to show up on the die so they can finish the feathers.

To play with a partner, students can work together to fill up the mat or they can each work on their own mats. Students can even predict which color they think will fill in first, last, and so on. They always think it’s so fun to “cheer” for a particular color.

Beginning Sounds Turkey Game

This beginning sounds game also has students working toward filling in all of the feathers on a turkey, but it’s for literacy practice instead.

Adding candy to a turkey feather

Students will choose a card from a pile of picture cards, identify the picture by name, and then listen for the beginning sound of that word. Once the student has been able to identify the initial sound, they will look for the letter on the mat that matches that sound. Just like the last game, students will place a small candy or manipulative on the correct letter.

You could also modify this game to practice letter identification if you have students who still need to practice uppercase and lowercase letters. Instead of using the picture cards included with the freebie, you could use your own uppercase letter cards. Students can choose a card and then find the lowercase letter on the mat that matches the capital letter on the card they chose.

6 Ways to Use These Turkey Games

There are so many ways that you can use these games in your classroom!

1. Centers

Since these games are easy to play, they’re perfect to use during center time in your classroom. Students won’t need very much direction or support from you, since these are skills they are reviewing and the rules of the game are easy to understand. To make this easy to use and reuse in your center rotations, just laminate the game boards and use small manipulatives for the game pieces instead of candy.

2. Morning Work

These games can also be used during your morning work routine. Students can get started as soon as they’ve taken care of their morning tasks like putting away their backpacks. Since this activity can be played over and over, it will keep students engaged until you’re ready to get started with the daily routine.

3. Early Finishers

You can have these game mats and manipulatives available for your students who finish their work early. This is a great fast-finisher activity for the month of November!

4. Class Party

On the last day of school before Thanksgiving break, you can send your students off with some turkey fun! These games are perfect for a low-prep activity to use for a class party. You can use candy as the game pieces so it doubles as a party treat!

5. At-Home Practice

This activity could be something fun to send home for students to play with their families. Over the holiday break, many students will be visiting with family members of a similar age who might love this fun activity! You could even get rid of some of your extra Halloween candy by sending home a fun-sized bag of candy for students to use for the game markers.

6. Fine Motor Practice

These turkey games also come in a black and white version, so your students can color in the turkeys themselves. This extra prep work can add some fun fine motor practice to your school day. Students can color in everything but the circles that they will use for the game. This is good practice for following directions, as well!
