It doesn’t have to take a lot of prep time to keep your homework routine running smoothly during this busy month!

The Benefits of Homework in May

It’s natural for some routines to gradually come to an end as the end of the school year approaches. However, homework is one routine that is helpful to keep up as long as possible.

The consistency of a homework routine can be so helpful for young kindergarten students! When the last few weeks of school are filled with special activities that are out of the norm, familiar homework activities can add much-needed structure to the students’ daily routines.

Students are also approaching a long break when the summer slide can be a real challenge. Homework is an easy way to give students the review they need.

Kindergarten Homework Ideas for May

With an entire school year’s worth of skills to review, it can be challenging to narrow it down when planning homework activities! I wanted to share some of my favorite skills to include in May homework for kindergarteners.

Phonemic Awareness and Phonics

There are so many different phonemic awareness and phonics skills that students have learned over the course of the school year. This foundation will serve them well as they go into first grade! You can choose homework activities that incorporate both phonemic awareness and phonics skills in one activity.

Rhyming activity

For example, this May homework activity invites students to listen for rhyming words. However, this activity also includes word reading so students can practice their phonics skills. They will first read the word and then find a picture that rhymes with that word. This is a great way to help students practice multiple skills with one engaging activity!

Sight Words

It’s also helpful to include sight word practice in kindergarten homework. The more exposure students have to high frequency words, the easier it will be for them to recognize them with automaticity. This helps them become more fluent and confident readers! Homework activities can provide engaging repetition that keeps students motivated to practice sight words.

A sight word decoding activity

This sight word activity is a great example! Students will love using the secret code to decipher the sight words on the page. As students transfer the letters to the correct blanks, they will also be working on their letter formation skills. Once they have filled in the blanks for each word, they will read the sight words they’ve spelled.

Counting and Graphing

Students have also been working hard on a variety of number sense skills during the school year. Your math homework can give students the chance to practice multiple skills with one fun seasonal activity.

A fish-themed counting and graphing activity.

In this activity, students will start by counting a variety of sea creatures. Once they have used one-to-one correspondence to count each one, they will fill in the graph to represent each of the numbers. After graphing, students will then practice comparing numbers by circling which picture had the most and which had the least. This is a fun way for students to practice graphing and analyzing data!

Addition and Subtraction

Addition and subtraction can be tricky concepts for kindergarten students, so it’s a good idea to review these skills during your May homework routine.

A flower-themed addition activity

In this activity, students will add the numbers and then color in the flower that matches the correct answer.

Fish-themed addition and subtraction activity

You can also include addition and subtraction into one homework activity. In this example, students will start by solving each addition or subtraction problem. Then they will use the included key to color the fish based on the answer. This will help students review color words as they use the key! The coloring also adds much-needed fine motor practice to the homework routine.

More Ways to Use Homework Printables

Since homework activities are meant to be low-prep and easy for students to complete, they are useful for other parts of your May lesson plans. If you don’t sent home printable homework, you might find these worksheets helpful in other ways:

  • Morning Work: These review activities are easy for students to complete independently, which makes them a great option for morning work time.
  • Summer Review Packet: Many of these summer-themed homework activities would be a fun addition to a review packet. You could compile activities for your students to take home at the end of the year to help them get ready for first grade. These packets can help students avoid the summer slide!
  • Flex Time: The schedule at the end of the school year is often interrupted by assemblies, field trips, and special guests. While these activities are fun and memorable for students, they can often lead to pockets of time when they run long or end early. It’s so helpful to have print-and-go activities on hand to use when this happens! Students are able to get right to work on a meaningful learning activity with minimal introduction or instruction from you.

No matter how you decide to use these printables, they’ll be a great addition to your May lesson plans.
