Kindergarten Literacy Centers for February

There are so many important literacy skills that students can review by this point in the school year. These engaging centers can help you combine some of the fun February holidays with literacy practice. These activities cover a wide range of events, like Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, Presidents Day, and Dental Health Month. Here are some of the skills that students can practice with these fun centers:

Beginning, Middle, and Ending Sounds

Students can practice identifying sounds in all positions of words with engaging activities. For example, in this penguin fishing activity, students can match pictures to letters based on the beginning sound they hear.

Other center activities can help them identify beginning and ending sounds to help them complete words.

Students are also able to practice identifying medial sounds by listening for the vowel sound in the middle of each word.

Digraphs

If your students could use more practice with digraphs, they’ll love this fun center activity! They will use a spinner to choose a digraph, and then color a picture with that digraph sound.

Word Families

As students become more comfortable with word families, it will be easier for them to see word chunks as they read. This Valentine-themed center encourages students to sort pictures by word family and then write the words on their recording sheets.

CVC Words

Could your students use practice with reading CVC words? You can use a seasonal activity like this center to help students match pictures to the correct word.

It’s also helpful to use center activities to help students get more opportunities to practice reading sight words.

Building sight words according to the secret code

They can use a variety of seasonal word-building activities to help them identify sight words with more fluency.

Sentence Building

Students can combine their knowledge of phonics and sight words to create sentences with seasonal vocabulary. They can use clues on the cards such as punctuation and capitalization to help them put the word cards in order.

These seasonal activities are also perfect for math review! Students can get a lot of repetition and practice with these important skills by using a wide variety of seasonal centers for February. Here are some examples of the math skills that students can practice during centers time:

Counting

Give your students some extra practice with one-to-one correspondence with a fun Valentine-themed center. Students will count the correct number of dog bones to match the Valentine balloon the dog is holding.

Counting by 5 and 10

If your students are ready to practice counting by 5s and 10s, centers time is a great time for this review! Students can use self-correcting puzzles to help them practice counting by 5s and 10s.

It’s always helpful to give students as much practice as possible with tricky teen numbers! Fun seasonal activities will help keep them engaged in teen number practice.

Whether it’s counting tally marks on a Valentine postcard or matching teen numbers to the corresponding base ten blocks, a bit of holiday fun can bring some extra engagement to teen number review.

Addition and Subtraction

Finally, you can include engaging addition and subtraction practice in your centers rotation.

Students can complete a mystery picture by matching equations to the correct sums on the puzzle mat. You can also celebrate Dental Health Month with this fun tooth fairy addition activity. Students can use the tooth fairy coins to help them model and solve each addition equation.

This game is also a fun way to add mixed review to centers time! Students will try to remove all of the clothes pins from the number line as they choose addition and subtraction task cards. Once they have solved the equation, they will remove the clothespin from that spot on the number line.
