This week we worked on part two of our Insects Unit! We were so excited coming in to the week knowing we would be learning more about insects! We did activities with each insect that were both fiction and nonfiction, hands-on, and lots of fun! Our week ended celebrating all of the insects that we learned! Even after learning about all of these insects, I am still not a big fan of them!! However, we did learn some really cool things about them! 🙂
Come take a peek at part two of our insect week!
Monday
We played a fun game to work on our teen numbers! I gave students a card with either a number or base ten blocks. They would walk around the room and find their matching partner.
We read a cute fiction story called ‘Buzz’ by Eileen Spinelli. We thought about what we would do if we could fly. I had my students write about what they would do and then they made a craft with their face as the bees face 🙂 So cute!
Tuesday
Today we read a nonfiction book about ladybugs and placed some of our new learning on our ladybug anchor chart.
Then I had my students write some facts that they learned about ladybugs.
After that we made a ladybug craft to place our writing under the body! We used our fingers to make the spots on the ladybug. We love getting to put our finger in paint!
Wednesday
Paint two days in a row?!?!
We read ‘The Grouchy Ladybug’ by Eric Carle today and painted plates to make our grouchy ladybugs.
We also wrote about why we think the ladybug was grouchy to go with our grouchy ladybug craft. They turned out adorable!!
We jumped right in to reading a nonfiction book about butterflies. We learned about the butterfly life cycle and made an anchor chart to show it.
We also put together a butterfly life cycle flip book to show our new learning of the different stages of a butterfly.
Thursday
We built caterpillars in a mini book to show all of the different ways we can show teen numbers.
We read ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle and sequenced the different things that the caterpillar ate.
Then I had my students sequence the story on their own.
This next craft is one of my favorites. It is so much fun to make and so so cute!! We made ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and placed the food in its belly in the correct order.
Friday
We wrote the different stages of a butterfly today and made it into a 3D butterfly!!! I think this one might have been my kiddos favorite craft. They loved how the butterfly stood up on the table by itself. This craft sure made our room feel like spring!
After learning about all of these insects the past 2 weeks, it was time to pick our favorite insect! We made a class graph to show all of our favorite insects.
We ended the week by writing about our favorite insect. We turned the writing into a craft of course! I had my students pose to make it look like they were holding a net. This craft gave us some good laughs and turned out to be a huge hit on our wall in the hallway. When you lift up the net, you can see their writing.
