The Benefits of Kindergarten Crafts

Crafts can be such a valuable part of the kindergarten curriculum! They are more than just a fun way to pass the time. In fact, students are hard at work as they complete a craft project in kindergarten. Here are some of the benefits of using crafts in kindergarten, especially during the busy spring months:

  • Fine Motor Practice: Students can always use more practice with fine motor skills! They can improve their hand strength and coordination with crafts.
  • Seasonal Fun: When spring fever hits, it’s always a good idea to incorporate some seasonal fun into your lesson plans whenever possible. Crafts can help you acknowledge the holiday without putting learning on the back burner.
  • Engaging Skill Practice: Crafts can help your students practice other content area skills in an engaging way. This will help them review important skills as they prepare for summer break!

4 Fun Easter Crafts for Kindergarten

If you would like to incorporate some additional craft activities into your spring lesson plans, you’ll definitely want to check out these four Easter craft ideas. They would be perfect for an Easter thematic unit!

1. 3D Bunny Craft

First is a 3D bunny craft. This fun activity is a great way for students to practice following directions, since students will take specific steps in order to assemble this fun Easter bunny craft.

This craft template comes on one page, so you can easily copy it onto cardstock or construction paper. Students can then color and cut out the pieces of the craft for fine motor practice. Then, they will follow the assembly instructions to create a bunny that can stand up on its own.

Students love to see their bunnies on display throughout the classroom since they can easily sit on desks, bookshelves, and window sills. These are such adorable student-made classroom decorations for spring!

2. Easter Bunny Basket

The next Easter craft is another fun addition to your spring classroom activities! This craft doubles as a fun basket for Easter eggs and uses paper plates for its structure.

Each basket will use three paper plates: One for the bunny’s face on the front of the basket, one for the ears, and one for the back of the craft. (I have a free template to help you cut the plates into the correct shapes.)

Students will be able to practice their fine motor skills as they assemble this craft. They will also get even more practice with following step-by-step directions, since this craft needs to be assembled in a specific order.

Once the basket is formed and the bunny face has been added, students can add a ribbon and easter grass to complete their baskets! You could even add a couple of Easter eggs with special treats as a gift for your students.

3. Bunny Trouble Writing Craft

You can also use crafts to enhance seasonal read-alouds with your class. This craft is a great example!

A Bunny Trouble writing activity and craft

Students will complete this cute writing craft after listening to the book Bunny Trouble by Hans Wilhem. Kindergarteners always enjoy this story about a soccer-loving rabbit named Ralph who gets stuck in a farmer’s cage right before Easter.

After reading the book together as a class, you can ask students how they would save Ralph if they were in that situation. This is always such a fun discussion! Giving students the chance to talk about it first can make it easier for them to put their thoughts on paper.

Once they’ve had a chance to think about their answer and talk about it, they will then write about it! Students can practice their letter formation, spelling, and sentence writing skills as they write a response to the prompt.

Then it’s time for the fun part: Creating the rabbit craft! Students will assemble a paper rabbit that will “hold” their writing. The final product looks adorable on a bulletin board! Students are always so excited to see their work on display and to read what their peers wrote, as well.

4. Easter Egg Descriptive Writing Craft

Students can also use a craft as the inspiration for descriptive writing practice. For this activity, students will use paint to decorate their own paper Easter egg. Cotton swab painting is perfect for this activity!

Once the egg is complete, students can use their writing skills to describe the egg they created. They can use a graphic organizer to plan the different words they can use to describe their egg craft. Finally, they can describe their egg by writing complete sentences.

A fun activity after these crafts are completed would be to match the writing to the correct eggs. You could line up the eggs and then choose a description at random to read to the class. Students will need to rely on the descriptions to choose the correct egg! Once they’ve all been matched up, you could put the final product on display for a festive bulletin board.
