Using Crafts in Preschool

Crafts aren’t just a fun way to pass the time in a preschool classroom. They are an important part of the learning process for young children. Here are just some of the many benefits of using crafts in preschool:

  • Learn to Use School Supplies: From scissors to glue, crafts give preschoolers the chance to learn how to use school supplies safely and efficiently. This practice will help them so much when they get to kindergarten!
  • Practice Following Directions: One of the most helpful skills for preschoolers to learn before kindergarten is how to follow step-by-step directions. Crafts are one of the best ways for them to practice this skill!
  • Build Community: When completed crafts are put on display in the classroom, preschoolers feel more included as part of the community. It will help them feel like they belong in the classroom.
  • Reinforce Learning: Crafts can be such a great way to reinforce the skills your preschoolers are learning in the classroom. They can be a fun way for students to review important readiness skills.

Preschool Alphabet Crafts

I have put together a set of printable alphabet crafts that are perfect for the preschool classroom! Each craft uses the letter to create a picture of something associated with that letter of the alphabet. For example, a lowercase c is used to create the body of a crab.

They are such a fun way for students to review the letters of the alphabet. I’ll walk you through how easy they are to use with preschoolers.

1. Choose the Letter

The first step is to choose the letter that you’d like your preschoolers to create with the craft. This could be a letter that you’re focusing on for your letter of the day/week routine or another letter that they’ve learned already. You can also decide if you want students to create the uppercase or lowercase letter.

I’ve found that these crafts are most effective when students can craft with a letter that they already know. They think it’s so fun that the letter is “disguised” within the craft! If they aren’t as familiar with the letter, they might just focus on the fact that they created a worm craft instead of a craft for the letter W.

2. Choose the Template

Once you’ve picked the letter you want to craft with your preschoolers, it’s time to choose the template that works best for your classroom! I have included a template that you can print directly onto colored paper, so students just need to assemble the craft.

There is also a template that you can print onto white paper, so students can color as well as assemble the craft. The great thing about these alphabet crafts is that you can decide which option works best for your students and their current fine motor skills.

3. Strategically Prep the Materials

Once you have the templates printed, it’s time to prep them strategically. You can decide how much of the craft, if any, you want your preschoolers to cut out. For example, you might have a group of preschoolers who do pretty well with scissors, but would have trouble with cutting out the smaller pieces. In that case, you might decide to cut out most of the craft pieces and leave the students with one large piece to cut out on their own, like the actual letter.

4. Provide a Visual

Crafting is a great way for students to practice following step-by-step directions, but it can be challenging if they can’t see the big picture of what they’re doing. That’s why I recommend displaying a visual of the completed craft for students.

Instead of having one completed craft at the front of the room, you could print off copies of a visual for each table. That’s why I provided printable images of each completed craft so they are easy to prep and provide for student reference.

5. Display or Publish

Once the alphabet craft is complete, it’s time to put it on display! The completed crafts look great on their own as a bulletin board display, but there are additional things you can add to the craft so students can create their own alphabet book.

Each craft comes with a label and a letter tracing strip that your preschoolers can add to each page. This gives them additional letter formation practice and it also turns the craft into a book page. After students have completed all of the alphabet crafts, you can assemble them into a book that they can take home and share with their families. They’re always so excited for this!
