December is such a fun month in the kindergarten classroom! Students are able to make special seasonal memories as they eagerly await the winter break. A great way to keep students engaged in skill practice and create kindergarten memories is with festive craft projects! In this post, I’m going to share some of my favorite December crafts for kindergarten!
15 December Crafts for Kindergarten
These December crafts for kindergarten are a great way to bring some seasonal fun to your classroom in the weeks leading up to winter break. Students will be able to channel some of their seasonal excitement into worthwhile activities. Crafts are a fun way to help students practice a variety of academic skills as they improve their hand strength and practice following directions. Plus, the festive crafts make great holiday displays for December!
1. All About Reindeer Craft and Writing
Learning about reindeer is a fun addition to your December lesson plans! You can use a writing craftivity to help students document their favorite facts about reindeer. Students can create a reindeer craft to hold the informational books that they create. The final product looks adorable on a December bulletin board!
2. Reindeer Addition Craft
You can also use a reindeer craft to enhance addition practice in your classroom during the busy month of December. After completing the reindeer craft, students can write and solve a variety of addition equations. This is a fun way for students to practice addition!
3. Mooseltoe Addition Craft
One of my favorite read alouds for December is “Mooseltoe” by Margie Palatini. After reading the story together as a class, students can use this book as inspiration for a themed addition craft. Students will add a combination of ornaments and candy canes to the Moose’s mustache, then write an addition sentence to go with it.
4. Mooseltoe Addition Beads
This “Mooseltoe” craft is another fun way to help your students practice addition! Students can create a moose with a pipe cleaner mustache that they will then use as an addition activity. Students can put different numbers of beads on each side of the mustache to model and solve addition equations.
5. Gift to Santa Writing Craftivity
For some writing practice, students can write and illustrate a sentence about what gift they would get for Santa. They can add an adorable Santa craft for the front cover. This makes such a fun kindergarten keepsake!
6. Santa’s Stuck Story Elements Craft
Another fun read aloud for December is “Santa’s Stuck” by Rhonda Gowler Greene. After reading and discussing the story together as a class, they can create this fun chimney craft to go with a story elements flip book. This craft gives students the opportunity to practice writing and illustrating sentences.
These crafts are all included in one easy-to-download Christmas thematic unit for kindergarten.
7. Hot Chocolate Addition Craft
“The Polar Express” by Chris Van Allsburg can inspire multiple craft ideas for December! This hot chocolate craft gives students the chance to practice addition. They can split a combination of marshmallows between two mugs. Then they will write a number sentence to model the addition they used to find the total number of marshmallows.
8. “The Best Gift of All” Craft
After reading The Polar Express together as a class, it’s always fun to ask students what they would choose as the first gift of Christmas. In fact, this can inspire a festive writing activity! Students can write and illustrate a sentence that describes the best gift of all, then assemble a gift craft as a cover for their writing.
9. The Polar Express Sequencing Craft
Students can also practice sequencing story events with a Polar Express train craft! Students can use the completed crafts to help them practice retelling the story.
If you’d like to take a closer look at these Polar Express-inspired crafts, you can find them in my Polar Express thematic unit.
10. The Gingerbread Man Writing Book
One of my favorite parts of a gingerbread man unit is to read multiple versions of this popular story. After reading two different versions, students can decide which one they like best. They can write about their favorite story and create a gingerbread man craft for the front cover of their writing.
11. Gingerbread Oven Craft
Students can then write their own gingerbread story for creative writing practice. This oven craft makes the perfect front cover for their completed writing!
12. Gingerbread Man Glyph
Another fun gingerbread craft for December is a gingerbread glyph! Students will answer a variety of questions to determine how they will decorate their gingerbread crafts. For example, if they like the taste of gingerbread, they will add a red nose to their gingerbread craft. If they don’t, they’ll add a yellow nose instead.
13. Gingerbread Addition Craft
You can also add a gingerbread craft to your math practice! Students will create their own cookie sheet crafts with aluminum foil. Then they will add a combination of gingerbread men and gingerbread girls to the cookie sheet to model an addition sentence.

Reindeer activities are always hit with students in December! This 3D reindeer craft can stand up on its own, so it makes a perfect classroom decoration. The completed reindeer can easily sit on bookshelves, desks, or tables. This craft also makes a special kindergarten keepsake that students can take home when winter break finally arrives!
