Are you looking for some engaging activities to use in your classroom this December? These reindeer activities for kindergarten are a great way to combine learning with some holiday fun!
8 Reindeer Activities for Kindergarten
By the time December rolls around, students are eagerly awaiting winter break and the upcoming holiday! It can be helpful to have some engaging themed activities in your teacher toolbox to keep students on track. Here are some of my favorite kindergarten reindeer activities that will bring a touch of seasonal fun to your December lesson plans:
1. All About Reindeer Book
Before diving into other fun reindeer activities, it’s always a great idea to help students learn more about reindeer. Some kindergarten students might only associate reindeer with Christmas, so it’s fun for them to learn about where reindeer live and what they do during the rest of the year.
You can read a variety of nonfiction books about reindeer and document what you’re learning on an anchor chart. Students can then choose their favorite facts about reindeer for their own informational book about reindeer.
After writing their facts in the book, students can create this fun reindeer craft to hold their writing activity. The final product makes an adorable interactive bulletin board display during the holiday season!
2. Number Line Addition
You can also incorporate some reindeer fun into math practice in your classroom! First, you can help students practice addition using a number line with these reindeer mats.
You can give students two numbers to write on their number mats. Then they can put their reindeer manipulative on the first number and then count the number of reindeer leaps shown by the second number. They will then write down the number they land on as the sum of that addition problem.
Once students have had a chance to practice this with you, they can transfer those skills to a reindeer number line worksheet. Using the same reindeer manipulative and number line at the top of the page will help students generalize their learning to a new activity.
3. Reindeer Addition Craft
You can continue the reindeer addition fun with an adorable craft! Students will create a reindeer craft and then attach a blank reindeer addition page. They can then choose two cookie cards at a time to create addition equations to solve.
The pictures on the cards will help students count the total number of cookies so they can record the number on the page. These completed crafts are another great option for a classroom display in December!
4. Roll and Remove Game
This reindeer game has a sweet twist! Students will line up candy canes under numbered reindeer. They will take turns rolling two dice and adding up the total number of dots.
Once they have figured out the sum, they will find the reindeer holding that number and remove the candy cane from below that reindeer. Students will continue to play until all of the candy canes have been removed.
This is a great open-ended activity for centers, since students will be eager to put the candy canes back in a row and play again once they’ve finished a round of the game. They will be able to stay engaged and on track until it’s time to move on to the next activity.
You can find the first four activities I mentioned above in one easy-to-download Christmas unit for kindergarten.
5. Number Order Mystery Puzzle
Your students will love watching this picture come to life as they put numbers in the correct order. They’ll love to see the reindeer next to his penguin friend wearing reindeer antlers!
This self-correcting activity is a great option for centers! The picture provides feedback about whether or not the numbers are in the right order. If the picture doesn’t look right, the numbers need to be switched! This means students are able to complete the activity with minimal support.
6. Rudolph Addition
This is another fun math center that’s perfect for some reindeer-themed addition practice. In this activity, students will have sleigh cards with different numbers on them.
They will find addition equations that total the number on the sleigh and sort the cards accordingly. They can create their own reindeer team for Santa’s sleigh while practicing their addition skills!
Both the number order mystery puzzle and this Rudolph addition activity are included in a full set of centers for December.
7. Paper Bag Reindeer Craft
This paper bag reindeer craft is such a fun addition to your December lesson plans! If your students are putting together a gift for their parents, this reindeer craft can be a fun way to wrap it.
You could also fill each reindeer craft with newspaper and use them as a stand-alone classroom decoration for December! Check out my blog post where you can grab the reindeer craft template for free!
8. 3D Reindeer Craft
This is another reindeer craft that’s perfect for your December lesson plans. This 3D reindeer craft is always so fun for students to assemble! It encourages them to follow directions and gives them a chance to improve their hand strength and coordination as they put it together.
There are many different ways that your students can decorate their reindeer crafts. They can spell their names, add their Christmas wishlist, or even use the craft for a holiday greeting. No matter how you use this craft, they look adorable sitting on their own throughout the classroom. These 3D crafts can stand alone on bookshelves, desks, and tables!
