6 Ideas for Teen Number Practice

Teaching teen numbers in kindergarten requires a toolbox of engaging activities. Having a wide variety of activities on hand can help you make sure that your teen number practice is fresh and interesting for your students.

I have created teen number books that include a variety of activities in one easy-to-prep resource! Here are some of the fun ideas for teen number practice that are included in these number booklets.

1. Number Formation

Each booklet starts with an introduction to number formation where students can practice writing the teen number and the number word. First, they will use rainbow writing to get many repetitions with number formation in a fun way. Students love using all of the crayon colors to complete this rainbow writing activity! Then students will complete a trace and write activity to practice the number and number word.

2. One-to-One Correspondence Coloring

Next students can practice counting with one-to-one correspondence as they also practice their fine motor skills through coloring. Each booklet has a different theme for this page to keep it engaging for students. In the example page above, students will count and color 13 bubbles on the page. In another booklet, students color pepperoni on a pizza.

3. Number Sense

As students are learning about teen numbers, it’s important for them to visualize that these numbers are created with a group of tens and some ones. Number sense activities can really help students understand this concept through engaging practice.

First, students can practice representing the teen number in different ways by coloring in ten frames and unit cubes. Then, they can make a mystery picture come to life by coloring in the different representations of the teen number according to the key. This can help students become more familiar with number words, tally marks, ten frames, and more. They love to see the picture come to life as they color!

4. Connect the Dots

Students can continue to practice number identification and counting with a connect-the-dot activity. Each booklet contains a different picture for students to complete, which keeps the activity fresh and engaging for students! Coloring the completed picture is a great way to keep early finishers engaged!

5. Number Line

For additional counting practice, students can find the teen number on the number line by counting on from zero. They can use a writing utensil to jump up the number line as they count. This is an important skill for students to develop! Students will use number lines to help them understand future math concepts like addition, subtraction, and negative numbers. The more practice they can get with number lines, the better!

6. Number Word Practice

Finally, students can have some additional practice with the teen number word at the end of the booklet. First, they will trace the number word at the top of the page for letter formation practice. Then, they can read three sentences that include the number word. There are illustrations to help students with the one word in each sentence that isn’t a high-frequency or number word.

As students read the sentences, they can color in a star at the bottom of the page. This encourages them to do repeated readings, which will help them become more confident and fluent readers. Plus, reading the number word multiple times will help it stick!
