5 Must-Have Kindergarten Resources from A spoonful of Learning

Top 5 Resources from Last School Year

Many of the top resources from this past school year are resources that you can use from the very beginning of the year. This can help you start the year off on the right foot with engaging and flexible learning activities!

1. Numbers to 10 Activities

At the beginning of the school year, you’ll likely find that your students have a wide range of number sense skills. Some students are just learning how to count by rote while other students are almost ready for addition! Reviewing numbers to 10 is a great way to fill in any number sense gaps as you focus on one number at a time.

I love to read through the reviews of this product to see the many different ways that teachers are using this versatile resource in their classrooms! Some teachers use these printables as review during math centers. Other teachers add these printables to their Number of the Day or Number of the Week routines. In some classrooms, teachers use these engaging printables for their morning work or homework routines.

2. Editable Name Books

Another important task at the beginning of the year is to help students learn how to identify, spell, and write their first names. This life skill can have a significant impact on how students navigate the classroom, since they need to identify their cubbies and supplies. It’s helpful to give students as much repetition with their name practice as possible!

3. Homework

I know that homework isn’t something that all kindergarten classrooms incorporate into their routine. However, these homework printables have proven to be a time-saver for teachers even if they don’t send work home with their students.

These print-and-go seasonal activities include standards-based spiral review so students can independently practice a variety of skills. Teachers have used these engaging themed activities for morning work, literacy and math centers, and small group instruction. Since they are designed for students to complete with minimal assistance from adults, teachers have also shared that they’re helpful to add to sub plans!

4. Sight Word Readers

As the school year progresses and students have been growing by leaps and bounds in their phonics skills, it’s time to help them increase their fluency with sight word practice. When students can recognize high-frequency words with automaticity, they will become more fluent and confident readers!

One resource that I’ve created for sight word practice has been very popular with teachers. These are printable readers for 100 high frequency words. Each sight word reader also includes a corresponding worksheet that students can use for additional fluency practice and review.

When looking through the teacher feedback from this resource, it’s clear that students love to be able to take home these printable books after they’ve practiced with them in class. This is such a fabulous way to encourage students to read at home, which can further increase their confidence! They sure feel like readers when they can take home an entire book and read it to someone in their family!
