Creating a Paper Bag Reindeer Craft

Step One: Gather Supplies

This reindeer craft only requires a few supplies:

Supplies needed for a reindeer paper bag craft
  • Reindeer templates printed off on white, red, and brown paper
  • Lunch-size brown paper bags
  • Twine or ribbon
  • A hole punch
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Step Two: Cut Out Reindeer Pieces

The next step is to cut out the individual reindeer pieces. You can choose to cut all of these out for your students to simplify the assembling process.

For additional fine motor practice, you can just do a rough cut around each reindeer piece and have your students get them ready for assembling the craft.

Step Three: Shape the Paper Bag

The next step is to cut the top of the paper bag to make it round. Again, this is a step that you could do before assembling the craft with your students.

You could also draw a round line across the top of each bag for students to use as a guide. You can definitely adjust this activity to fit your schedule and to best support your students!

Step Four: Add String

After the bag has been rounded off, students can fold it down to prepare it for hole punching!

Just add two holes near the fold of the bag and add the twine.

Step Five: Attach Reindeer Pieces

The final step is to attach the reindeer pieces to the bag with glue! First, students can place the reindeer eyes and nose on the flap of the bag.

Students can then add a dot of glue to the end of each antler and tuck it underneath the flap.

Ideas for Using this Paper Bag Reindeer

The best part of creating this fun reindeer craft is deciding how you want to use it in your classroom! Here are a few of my favorite ideas.

Holding a completed paper bag reindeer craft

Classroom Decor

First, the completed reindeer can make a festive classroom display! Since the lunch sacks can sit up independently, you can easily place them on desks and bookshelves to help decorate your classroom for the holiday! You can also use a little bit of tape or sticky tack to help keep them in place.

Bulletin Board Display

The other great thing about using a lunch sack for this craft is that it can easily lay flat to display on a wall. This makes a fun and festive bulletin board!

If you do any reindeer writing during the month of December, you could display the writing next to each student’s paper bag reindeer. Students will be so excited to look for their reindeer and writing on display!

Holiday Party Activity

Festive crafts are always a fun choice for a classroom holiday party! If you have several different activity stations, this paper bag reindeer could be one of the options. This can also make it easier to monitor students as they complete the activity, since they’ll be in smaller groups. If you have parents or other helpers in your classroom during your party, you could also easily do this as a whole-group activity since you have extra hands available to help.

Parent Gifts from Students

You can take advantage of the paper bag in this craft by using it as an adorable way to gift wrap your parent gifts this year. As your students assemble the craft, just be sure to add the gift to the bag prior to attaching the reindeer nose. You could also have students only place glue on the flap of the bag when attaching the nose so that it can still be opened and closed. This is a good option if your parent gift would make it tricky for students to attach the reindeer pieces after adding it to the bag.

To include some additional personalization to this gift for parents, you could swap out the antlers for student handprints! Just have your students trace their hands onto brown paper, then cut them out and attach them as reindeer antlers.

Student Gift from Teacher

You might decide that this craft is going to be something you create for your students as a gift from you! Just like the parent gifts, you can place a little goodie inside the bag before sealing it up.

If this seems like something you don’t have time for during this busy month, you could still have your students create the bags! Just make sure they glue the nose on the flap only and then display the reindeer. Then you could surprise your students by adding a little gift to the bag on the last day of school before break. They’ll be so excited to discover that a treat was added to their reindeer bag!
