October is an exciting month in kindergarten! The school year is well underway and the students have gotten used to the daily routine. However, with a holiday around the corner, it can be difficult for students to stay engaged and motivated to practice math and literacy skills. This is when crafts can come in handy! In this post, I’m going to share some of my favorite October crafts for kindergarten. You can use these craft ideas to bring some seasonal fun to your October lesson plans!
These engaging craft ideas are a great way to enhance your lesson plans during the month of October. You can help your students channel their excitement for the approaching Halloween holiday with craft activities that also practice important academic skills.
As students learn about spiders, they can organize and display what they have learned with a fun craft!
This spider facts craft gives students the chance to record facts about spiders in a “Can, Have, Are” format. Then, they can create an adorable paper spider to hold their facts. This craft looks adorable on a fall bulletin board display!
After students have learned a lot of facts about spiders, they can choose their favorite ones for a spider schema flipbook!
The front cover of this flipbook is an adorable three-dimensional spider craft that your students will love creating! With folded paper and a couple of googly eyes, students can create a cute spider to stand on the top of the spiderweb on the front of the flipbook.
Your students can practice counting as they create this fun spider math craft! After adding the legs to the spider, students can add numbers to each leg by counting the dots and matching them to the correct number.
This is a great way for students to practice number identification and one-to-one correspondence. They also look adorable “crawling” on the walls as a festive room decoration for October.
Retelling is a very important comprehension skill for young students to practice. You can add a craft to make it even more fun and engaging!
After reading the Itsy Bitsy Spider poem to your students, they can create this fun craft to help them retell it. Students can review two-dimensional shape names as they follow directions to create the scene. Then you can add a plastic spider and bendy straw, along with a rain cloud and sun to complete the scene. As students retell the poem, they can use the craft to help them remember and act out what happened!
Bats are another fun animal to focus on during the month of October! Students can document their favorite facts about bats with this cute craft project!
Students will create a bat to hold a booklet of their favorite facts about bats. Each page has room for students to write and illustrate a sentence about bats. These crafts make an eye-catching interactive display of bat facts!
Crafts can also enhance read-alouds in your classroom during the month of October. This craft is the perfect addition to a story elements book for Stellaluna.
Students can practice their fine motor skills as they cut and assemble the bat for the front cover of a story elements book. Each page of the book will include details about the book, so the fun craft on the front cover sets the tone for what’s inside!
It wouldn’t be October without some pumpkin activities! These pumpkin glyph crafts are such a fun way for students to create a festive jack-o-lantern craft for October.
Each part of the jack-o-lantern’s face corresponds to a different question. For example, students will use triangle eyes if they have a pumpkin at home. They will use circle eyes if they don’t. After creating their pumpkin glyphs, students will write sentences to go with their responses. This is a great way to add more writing practice to the learning routine!
Students can learn more about pumpkins as they create this life cycle pop-up craft. Each page of this book craft contains a different part of the pumpkin life cycle. Students will color, cut and glue a picture of that part of the life cycle. They will also write the word for each step of the life cycle on the lines provided.
This activity helps students practice following instructions, since they need to listen carefully in order to create the pop-up feature of their books. They are always so excited to take these books home to share with their families!
Finally, this pumpkin Venn diagram craft is perfect for enhancing another October read-aloud in your classroom. This craft project is based on “The Biggest Pumpkin Ever” by Steven Kroll.
After reading the story together as a class, students can create this Venn diagram craft to compare and contrast the characters in the story. This is a great way to help students review events from the book!
