October is a great time to have some holiday fun in the classroom! In this post, I wanted to share some of my favorite Halloween ideas for kindergarten. These activities will help you bring some holiday fun to your classroom while keeping learning on track.
If you’re in a school district that allows some Halloween festivities, you’ll find that celebrating Halloween in kindergarten is actually a bit different than other grade levels. In a classroom of young children, you will find that there are many students who are sensitive to monsters, bats, or witches. On the other side of the coin will be students who are so excited about all things Halloween that it can be hard to keep them on task!
The activity ideas I’m going to share will help you bring a touch of non-spooky seasonal fun to your classroom that still encourages students to practice literacy and math skills. Your students will love these fun Halloween ideas for kindergarten!
One of my favorite ways to bring some seasonal fun to the classroom is during centers time! The hands-on activities are always so engaging for young students. They are able to channel some of their excitement into worthwhile literacy and math tasks. These Halloween centers would also be great to use on the day of your class party. You can set them up as fun stations for students to rotate through during your festivities.
These centers cover a wide range of standards for both math and literacy, so you can choose which activities are most appropriate for your students. For example, students can practice phonemic awareness skills like rhyming or they could build CVC words with their knowledge of letters or sounds.
Math activities for these centers include number sense, measurement, and more! Each math center includes an engaging Halloween-themed activity that your students will love.
Thematic units are another great way to bring some Halloween fun to your classroom. A pumpkin unit is perfect for October, especially since it can double as a classroom decoration!
After bringing in a classroom pumpkin, students can practice their estimation and measurement skills as they complete measurement and counting activities.
Another fun activity in this pumpkin unit study is creating a pumpkin glyph. Students will answer different questions about themselves, with each answer corresponding to a different part of the jack-o-lantern face. After creating their own pumpkin glyph, students will write sentences for each part of the jack-o-lantern. The end results is a fun pumpkin glyph book with the an adorable front cover!

Bats don’t have to be spooky! In this thematic unit, students are able to learn more about bats by reading non-fiction books together as a class. They can write and illustrate interesting facts about bats and then assemble them into a fun bat book!
Students can also practice their math skills with fun bat-themed activities. In this activity, students will match numbers to quantities by matching bat wings. This is a great practice with one-to-one correspondence and number identification!

It’s not Halloween without spiders! Just like the bat unit mentioned above, this thematic unit allows students to learn more about spiders by exploring non-fiction text. They can create this fun craft to document everything they’ve learned about spiders. This makes a fun seasonal bulletin board that adds to the Halloween atmosphere!
This spider unit also includes fun math activities that you can use throughout your daily routine. This Shake, Spill, and Count game would be a fun activity for a classroom Halloween party! Students will be engaged in math practice but the game format and spider rings will make it feel like a fun celebration.

This scarecrow unit study is a great option for around Halloween time! Many of the activities in this unit center around the book “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” by Linda Williams.
This is a fun book to read around Halloween time because students get a kick out of the pumpkin-headed scarecrow that couldn’t scare the little old lady.
Students can also practice a variety of math concepts during this unit, like one-to-one correspondence, comparing numbers, and identifying 2D shapes.
I have put together some free activities that you can use for Halloween festivities in your classroom!
This set of Halloween activities includes everything you need for a successful candy corn taste test (just add the candy)! It even includes a writing activity in which students can write and illustrate a sentence about their favorite candy corn.
After the taste test, students can create a candy corn craft for some fine-motor practice! I prefer to use cotton swabs for a dot-painting activity, but your can use the templates in any way you’d like!
In this free download you’ll also find a roll-and-color math activity that can bring some seasonal fun to math practice! You can adjust the difficulty of this activity by using one or two dice.
Finally, this free printable gift tag makes it easy to send home a Halloween goody for your students! Just print and attach the tag to a set of plastic fangs. You can send it home at the end of the day or have students open the gift in class so that you can snap a funny class picture!
