The end of the school year is full of important skill review and exciting activities, but it’s always a good idea to include some crafts in your lesson plans this time of year. In this post, I’m sharing some of my favorite May crafts for kindergarten that you could incorporate into your end of the year lesson plans.

12 Kindergarten Crafts for May
These craft ideas are perfect for young kindergarten students because they are able to apply many of the skills they’ve learned throughout the school year. Most of these crafts are paired with a writing activity, so students can continue to improve their phonics and fine motor skills as they share their thoughts on paper. Overall, crafts are more than just a fun way to spend time; they can be a worthwhile addition to your end of the year skill practice.
1. Mother’s Day Flower Card

One of my favorite crafts for May is this Mother’s Day card with a 3D flower on the front. This card includes fun inserts that your students can fill in about their moms or other special women in their lives. Be sure to check out my blog post where I share all of the different inserts that you can include in this Mother’s Day card craft.
2. Barn Craft and Writing

Spring is a fun time to incorporate a farm theme into your lesson planning! I have a farm unit that’s full of engaging crafts that are perfect for May. This cute barn craft doubles as a cover for an All About Farmers writing activity. Students can write their favorite fact about farmers and then attach their writing to the barn craft.
3. Farm Animal Writing Craftivities

As your students learn about different farm animals during your thematic unit, they can document their favorite facts about each animal. After writing and illustrating an animal fact, students can create their own animal craft to serve as a front cover!
4. Click Clack Moo Writing Craft

Crafts can also be a fun companion activity for your read alouds! This craft and writing activity is fun for students to complete after listening to Click, Clack, Moo by Doreen Cronin. Students will write their own letter to Farmer Brown, then create a fun cow craft to go with it.
5. Cause and Effect Pig Craft

Another engaging read aloud for a farm unit is If You Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff. After listening to this fun story, students will be ready to explore cause and effect. They can complete this cute pig craft to illustrate a cause and effect from the story or even one that they come up with themselves! These pig crafts make a really fun interactive bulletin board display!
6. My Favorite Farm Animal Writing Craftivity

Finally, after learning about many different farm animals, students can write about which animal is their favorite. After completing the writing, students can complete a craft of what they’d look like as a farmer! These little farmers are the perfect companion to the completed student writing.
7. All About the Ocean Book

In addition to a farm unit, a thematic unit about the ocean is perfect for the month of May, when students are dreaming about upcoming beach vacations. After learning all about the ocean, students can complete a book with their favorite facts about the ocean. They will love decorating the front cover of their books!
8. Ocean Animal Writing Crafts

Just like the farm unit, students can learn about a variety of ocean animals during this thematic unit. For each ocean animal, students will write and illustrate their favorite fact about the animal. Then, they will create a fun ocean animal craft to serve as a cover for their writing.
9. Rainbow Fish Craft

You can read The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister as part of your ocean unit! After reading the book together as a class, students can create their own rainbow fish craft with tissue paper squares. The completed craft makes a great topper for a writing activity about being a good friend.
10. Tickly Octopus Writing Craftivity

Ticky Octopus by Ruth Galloway is another fun read aloud during an ocean unit. Students will love creating the curly tentacles on a tickly octopus craft. They can also complete a writing activity to go with their craft, writing about where they are the most ticklish.
11. Hermit Crab Craft

Another fun book to include in an ocean thematic unit is A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle. This hermit crab craft can help students practice retelling the story. After decorating a new shell for the hermit crab, students can add the other items from the story to the shell.
12. My Favorite Ocean Animal Craft

This craft is a great way to end an ocean unit with your students. Since they learned about many different animals during the unit, students can decide which animal they like the best and why. Then, students will write and illustrate the reason why that ocean animal is their favorite. Finally, they can create an aquarium craft for the front cover of the writing.
