The Benefits of Coloring Pages in Kindergarten

With so many activities to choose from on the last day of kindergarten, you might not think about turning to a coloring page. Here are just a few reasons why coloring can be a great activity at the end of the year.

  • Create a Kindergarten Keepsake – I like to use a coloring page that’s labeled “This is how I colored on the last day of kindergarten” because it’s a simple way to create a keepsake of this milestone. It’s easy for families to tuck away as a special snapshot from kindergarten.
  • Celebrate the Last Day – Coloring is a fun activity that can easily be used as a way to celebrate the last day of school.
  • Measure Growth – A coloring page is a visible way for students to show their growth in fine motor skills. This is especially true if you have students color a similar page on the first day of school, as well!
  • Low Prep Activity – There are SO many things on your plate during the last week of the school year! Coloring pages are a low-prep way to incorporate engaging fine motor practice into the last day of kindergarten.

You can be selective about when you use a coloring activity during the school day. This will help you maximize the benefits of this activity for your students. Keep reading for some fun ideas to incorporate a last day of school coloring page into your lesson plans!

4 Ways to Use a Coloring Page on the Last Day

As you’re putting together your lesson plans for the last day of kindergarten, there are several places where you could include a coloring activity. You can decide what will work best for your students!

1. Morning Work

First, you can welcome your students to the last day of kindergarten with a coloring page.  With so much excitement in the air, this can be a great time to help students take a deep breath with a relaxing coloring page. This is especially helpful if your last day of school is jam-packed with schoolwide celebrations!

Having your students occupied at arrival time will also give you a chance to check in with your students individually before the day gets busy. Many of our young kindergarteners have big feelings about the school year coming to an end!

2. Centers or Stations

It’s likely that you won’t have time for a regular centers rotation on the last day of school. In fact, you have probably ended your regular centers routine long before the last day! However, your students might benefit from the routine of a familiar rotation schedule on the last day of school.

Simple activities like this last day of kindergarten coloring page are perfect for short, modified centers on the last day of school. You could also pull out a few summer-themed center activities for students to try! A centers rotation can give you a bit more flexibility in planning out the final activities you want to complete in your classroom.

3. Flexible Activity

An engaging coloring activity can add flexibility to your lesson plan in other ways, as well. I know it can be tricky to make plans for the last day of school! There are often schoolwide activities that either end early or run long, which can impact your plans for the day. A coloring page is the perfect print-and-go resource to have on hand when the schedule leaves you with pockets of time. This activity can easily be set aside and picked up later in the day, whenever the schedule allows.

4. Class Party

Are you having a class celebration on the last day of school? A coloring page is a great activity for your students to work on during a class party. Students can rotate through several hands-on activities as you celebrate the last day of school together as a class. You could make it extra fun by giving students clipboards and having them take their coloring project outside!
