When we think of a kindergarten summer review packet, it’s not uncommon to think of a set of activities to send home with students over the summer. While this is one great use of review activities, they can also be helpful in other ways! Keep reading for several ideas for how to use a summer review packet in your kindergarten classroom as you approach the end of the school year.
6 Ways to Use a Kindergarten Summer Review Packet
Putting together a packet that reviews academic concepts might feel like just one more thing on your plate at the end of the school year. However, there are actually several ways that you can use a kindergarten review packet to save time! I’m going to share several ideas for how you can use these review activities to make the most of the last few weeks of school.
1. Summer-Themed Skill Practice
As the year comes to an end, you can almost feel the excitement in the air! Students are looking forward to going on vacations, spending time with family, and enjoying time away from school. With so much on your students’ minds, it can be difficult to get them to think about reading and math!
Embracing your students’ excitement for summer can actually help them stay on track. A kindergarten review packet can be filled with summer-themed skill practice, which adds a bit of seasonal fun to your daily academic activities. It’s always amazing to see how this small change can make such a difference! For example, your students will love practicing rhyming words by coloring ice cream scoops or coloring sunglasses during math practice.
2. End of the Year Assessments
Review activities can also make your end of the year assessments go more smoothly. There are so many assessments that we need to give our students at the end of the school year! However, it can be hard to keep the class engaged and on track when it’s time to administer individual assessments.
A kindergarten review packet is full of activities that students can complete independently. You’ll be able to focus on working with students one-on-one, knowing that your class is working on worthwhile activities.
You can also use a review packet to give you additional information about your students’ academic performance. This can also be helpful during the assessment process at the end of the year!
3. Fast Finisher Activities
Coming up with fresh activities for early finishers can take a lot of effort, especially during the busy spring months. You can use a kindergarten review packet to save on some prep time! Just print off review activities for specific skills that you’d like students to practice and they’ll be ready to go!
To save even more time, you can combine several fast finisher activities into packets. Students can keep them in their desks to make them easy to access. This makes it easy for them to transition to the early finisher activity in those moments when they’re waiting for the next activity to begin.
4. Flexible Learning Activities
The last few weeks of school are full of schedule changes and unexpected pockets of time. Having a kindergarten review packet on hand will help you fill those extra minutes when an assembly ends early or an activity gets rescheduled.
You can create packets that students keep in their cubbies or desks, so it’s easy to pull out the learning activities whenever you need something for students to do on short notice. You can choose to let students work through the packets at their own pace, or assign certain pages. Either way, these flexible learning activities can keep you from running to the copy machine at the last minute!
5. Substitute Teacher Plans
It always feels like the end of the year is when unexpected things pop up! A kindergarten review packet can come in handy if you need to make last-minute sub plans. Since the skills in each activity are things that your class has already learned, it will be easy for your students to complete these activities without a lot of extra support.
When the review packet contains fun activities like these mystery pictures, your students will be excited to see what the substitute has in store for them! Your guest teacher will be grateful to have such engaging activities to keep students on task.
6. Prevent the Summer Slide
Finally, a kindergarten review packet is a great way to prevent the summer slide. You can send home these engaging activities to help students keep their skills sharp during the long break. They’ll be able to get ready for first grade with summer-themed activities! Some of the skills that your students can practice over the summer include:
- Counting, ordering, and comparing numbers
- Addition and subtraction
- Identifying beginning, middle, and ending sounds
- Reading words with short and long vowel sounds
- Identifying consonant blends and digraphs
- Reading sight words
- and so much more!
You can create a combination of activities that work best for your students!
