10 Engaging Kindergarten Homework Ideas

A common concern regarding kindergarten homework is that the tasks are not always developmentally appropriate for young students. However, with the right activities, homework can be an excellent way to help students review academic skills, practice responsibility, and build study habits. These ten engaging kindergarten homework ideas can help you set up an engaging and developmentally-appropriate homework routine for your students.

Developmentally-Appropriate Homework

There are a few important things to consider when setting up a kid-friendly homework routine:

  • Use Only Review Activities: Students should only receive homework activities for skills they’ve learned in the classroom. Homework should not be used as a method of instruction.
  • Require Age-Appropriate Skills: Keep in mind the current developmental level of your students when you choose activities. A kindergarten student in May has a lot more skills and knowledge to draw from than a kindergarten student in September!
  • Include Seasonal Themes: Homework printables don’t have to be boring! Using seasonal themes can be an easy way to make the homework routine a little more fun and engaging for young students.
  • Use a Consistent Format: When homework activities use a consistent format, it’s much easier for students to navigate their homework independently. This can go a long way in preventing frustration at home!

10 Kindergarten Homework Activity Ideas

Using a consistent format doesn’t mean you need to use the same activities all the time! Instead, you can use the same type of activities in different ways. Here are ten of my favorite activity ideas that can bring a lot of engagement to your kindergarten homework routine.

1. Color the Answer

Falling Beginning Sounds Activity

One of my go-to homework activities is to have students color the correct answer on the page. At the beginning of the year, this takes away some of the pressure to write when students are still learning letter and number formation. Coloring the answer can take many forms in your homework routine! Students can color matching objects, they could color all of the instances of a letter or number, or they can even color by code.

2. Cut and Paste

Another activity that’s fun for students is to cut and paste objects onto the page. This gives students the chance to review the literacy and math skills they’ve been learning at school while also improving their fine motor skills. They are able to practice using scissors safely as they complete their homework assignments.

3. Matching

Matching is another activity that’s great near the beginning of the year, when students are still learning how to hold a pencil. Instead of writing the answers, students can draw lines between matching letters, numbers, or words. This gives them the chance to practice making lines with a pencil while also reviewing the skills they’re learning at school.

4.Trace and Write

As students learn more about letter and number formation at school, homework can give them more repetition with this skill. Trace and write activities can remind student of the proper letter and number formation before they practice writing independently.

5. Sorting

Sorting activities can be a very engaging homework activity for students! The great thing about sorting is that they can be used to review so many concepts from the curriculum. Whether students are sorting by letter sound, by shape, or by mathematical operation, they will enjoy putting each picture where it belongs on the page.

6. Unscrambling

Students love to roll up their sleeves and get to work unscrambling words and sentences! Unscrambling is a fun way to review literacy and math skills! Students can put scrambled numbers in the correct order. They can also use three scrambled letters to form a word or put scrambled words into a sentence.

7. Look and Find

Young kindergarten students work hard on letter and number recognition, which requires visual discrimination skills. Look and find activities can be a fun way for students to sharpen these skills! Activities like find, color, and count or this sight word search can be fun ways for students to look for similarities and differences.

8. Puzzles

In addition to word search activities, students can complete other fun puzzles for homework. For example, students will love solving this puzzle by using the code at the top of the page. This is a fun way for them to practice writing and identifying sight words.

9. Reading

As students begin to start reading words and sentences, homework can be an excellent way for students to get more practice and repetition. There are many different ways to incorporate reading activities into homework in an age-appropriate way. For example, this sight word homework activity invites students to read sight words within a repeating, illustrated sentence frame. There are many other ways that you can use homework to help your students become more confident and fluent readers!

10. Writing

Finally, writing activities are another helpful addition to your homework routine. As students become more confident with letter formation, you can increase the amount of writing they do as homework. These sentence writing activities include a fun sentence scramble that students can complete before they write the sentence.
