Groundhog Day is such a fun day to learn about and celebrate in kindergarten! Students are always so interested to hear about this tradition and eager to learn if spring is around the corner or if more winter is in store. In this post, I’m going to share some engaging Groundhog Day crafts for kindergarten that will be a fun addition to your February lesson plans.
Groundhog Day Crafts for Kindergarten
Crafts are such a helpful learning tool in the kindergarten classroom! Students are more engaged in learning and they are also able to practice important skills like following directions, cutting, and coloring.
When it comes time to learn about Groundhog Day, crafts can be a helpful addition to your lesson plans. Students will be able to apply what they’re learning about this tradition to these engaging craftivities. I wanted to share three of my favorite Groundhog Day crafts to use in the kindergarten classroom.
1. It’s Groundhog Day! Flipbook and Craft
The first craft is a topper for a flipbook about Groundhog Day. As you discuss important facts about Groundhog Day through nonfiction read alouds, you can work together as a class to organize those facts on an anchor chart. (Grouping them by wh- question will be helpful for the craft!)
Students can then create a flipbook where they answer each of those wh-questions. They will complete each page that shares important facts about this tradition. Once the flipbook is complete, students will create a cute groundhog topper to go with it.
The flipbooks can then be used to create a fun interactive bulletin board display or you could have students take them home to share with their families. Your students will be so excited to tell their families everything they’ve learned about Groundhog Day!
2. 3D Groundhog Craft
This 3D groundhog craft is a fun way for students to summarize what happens on Groundhog Day. They will review what happens if the groundhog sees his shadow and what happens if he doesn’t. Then, there is a space for students to record whether or not the groundhog saw his shadow.
All of these facts are included on a different flap on the groundhog’s belly. The cards include space for students to practice writing the words “winter” and “spring”, which is great vocabulary review and fine motor practice! Students will also cut and paste corresponding pictures to each card.
This craft is fun for students to create because the completed groundhog can stand up. This 3D craft makes a great classroom decoration since it can stand up on a desk, bookshelf, or windowsill. It’s also easy to fold flat for students to transport back home.
This is also a great craft to help students practice following directions. There are specific steps that students need to complete in order for the craft to stand up on its own. This means that students need to listen carefully to instructions as they assemble the craft. This is such beneficial practice for young kindergarten students!
3. Groundhog Day Hat
The final craft gives students the chance to practice making predictions. This Groundhog Day hat has space on the hat band for students to record their predictions along with the results of Groundhog Day.
First, students will make a prediction about whether or not the groundhog will see his shadow. They will color the corresponding groundhog and sign on their hat band.
Once the results are in, students will color the corresponding groundhog and sign on the other half of the hat band. There is also space on the front of the hat for students to share what the results mean. They will share if there will be more winter or if spring is around the corner. You can even add a shadow to the hat to show whether or not the groundhog saw his shadow.
One of the reasons why I love to use printable hats in kindergarten is that they are a conversation starter! It’s so helpful for students to use the vocabulary that they’re learning in real life. When someone on the school campus sees a student wearing a hat they’ve made, they will naturally ask the student about it. This gives your kindergarteners the chance to practice their communication skills and vocabulary by explaining what they’re wearing on their heads!
More Groundhog Day Activities for Kindergarten
In addition to the fun crafts I shared above, there are other Groundhog Day activities that you can use throughout the day as students learn more about this tradition.
First, this printable nonfiction book about Groundhog Day is a great readaloud option to share with your students. Students will be able to learn more about when and why we celebrate Groundhog Day.
Next, you can add some math practice to your Groundhog Day predictions! Since making predictions is part of the hat craft mentioned above, you can take it a step further by graphing the student predictions. Students can practice graphing and summarizing data as they complete their own worksheets.
Finally, students can complete their own readers to take home. Students can fill in key words for each sentence, which adds some writing and vocabulary practice. Your kindergarteners will be so excited to take these books home to share with their families! This is a great way to encourage your students to practice reading at home.
