Practicing Shapes with Crafts

There are many reasons why crafts are such a great way for students to practice shapes!

  • Shape Formation: As students cut out or draw shapes, they become more familiar with the attributes of those shapes. Drawing or cutting around the three sides of a triangle is definitely more memorable than just repeating “triangles have three sides.”
  • Shape Identification: Not only will your students practice forming shapes as they create crafts, but they will also be practicing shape identification! As they follow your directions to assemble the craft, you will likely use shape names as part of those instructions. Students will be able to hear shape names and match those to the craft they’re creating.
  • Shape Displays: Having shapes on display in your classroom is a great way to keep shape names and attributes front and center! Crafts are an easy way to have student-created displays on your classroom bulletin boards.

Creating Kindergarten Shape Crafts

Are you looking for some shape crafts to try in your classroom? These three free crafts will help your students practice shape identification and formation as they create a fun display for your classroom.

Step One: Print

The first step is to print off the templates. There are two different options that you can use, depending on the skills that you’d like your students to practice.

If you would like your students to practice coloring, you can print off the templates on white paper. The students can then color all of the shapes before the next step.

The other option is to print off the templates on colored paper. The different pieces of the craft are arranged so you can easily copy the templates onto the correct paper color.

Step Two: Prepare the Shapes

The next step is for students to prepare the shapes. If you printed off the template pieces onto white paper, you can have the students color the shapes. Then students can cut out the shapes. This is great fine motor practice!

Step Three: Assemble the Picture

Once the students have the shapes prepped and ready to go, it’s time to assemble the picture!

You can have a completed picture available for students to reference as they put the pieces in the correct spaces. You can also complete the picture together as a class and have your students follow the step-by-step directions. This gives them another chance to hear the shape names as they listen to your instructions.

Step Four: Count the Shapes

Once the picture has been assembled, students can count the shapes that they used to complete the craft! Students will count each shape and then write the correct number on the line included at the bottom of the page.

5 Ways to Use These Shape Crafts

This craft idea can be used in so many different ways in your classroom! Here are just a few ideas:

Small Groups

Do you work on math or other targeted skills in small groups? A shape craft could be a fun addition to your small group lesson plans. Students can practice shape names and attributes while you walk them through the assembly of the craft. Plus, your students will get plenty of additional fine motor practice!

Math Centers

A shape craft is a great option for a math center activity. To make it easier for students to complete the craft in the time allotted, you could have the shape pieces pre-cut for your students.

Morning Work

If time is short in your classroom, you could split up the shape craft into a multi-day morning work activity! On the first day, students can color the pieces. On the second day, students can cut them out. (Just provide them with an envelope or bag so they don’t lose the pieces!) On the third day, they can assemble the craft. On the fourth day, they can count the shapes and record the numbers.

Fast Finishers

A shape craft is a fun way to keep your early finishers engaged until you move on to the next class activity. You can have the completed craft available for students to reference as they work. You could also take a photocopy of a completed, uncolored craft and turn it into a coloring page. This could cut down on the time and supplies needed for your students to complete the activity. Students can still count the number of shapes used to complete the picture and color the different shapes.

Homework

Finally, a shape craft is a great activity for students to work on at home! You can send home the shape pieces and invite students to assemble the craft at home. This encourages families to work on learning activities together outside of school hours.

I hope that this gives you some ideas for how you can incorporate shape crafts into your math lesson plans! There are so many ways that you can use these crafts in your daily routine. No matter when or how you use these 2D shape crafts, I’m sure your students will love them!
