Free Easter Center for Kindergarten

Free Easter Center for Kindergarten

This free center will help your students practice identifying beginning sounds and ending sounds in CVC words. It’s an easy way to bring a touch of Easter fun to your literacy centers this spring. Here are a few tips for getting this activity ready for your students:

Step One: Choose an Option

This freebie comes with two different options for the activity, depending on the needs of your students.

Easter center with no middle vowels

The first option has just the beginning and ending sounds. The vowel is not included on the activity, so the recording sheet has the students write only the beginning and ending sounds .

Easter center with middle vowel

The second option includes the middle vowel, so students will end up writing the full CVC word on their recording sheets.

Step Two: Download and Prep

After deciding which activity option you’d like to use, it’s time to download and prep the activity! You will cut out the bunny task cards as well as the lettered bunny ears. You can choose to laminate the pieces for durability so you can reuse them year after year.

To increase student accountability and engagement, you can also copy recording sheets. If you want to save paper, you can put the recording sheet in a page protector and have students use dry erase markers instead.

Step Three: Introduce the Center

The next step is the most important part of adding a new center to your rotation: Introducing the activity to your students.  I have written a blog post about how I introduce centers in kindergarten. The steps I describe in that post are helpful any time you add a new activity to the centers rotation.

Take a minute or two to review with your students how to listen for the beginning and ending sounds of a word. Show them a picture, ask them to name the picture, and then work together to decide what sounds you hear at the beginning and at the end of the word. Then write it down for your students. It can also be helpful to write it down on an actual recording sheet as part of your demonstration.

The other important part of introducing centers to your students is to show them what they need to do to reset the center when it’s time to rotate. If you use a reusable recording sheet, remind them to erase their work. Also encourage them to stack up the bunny ears and the task cards so it’s easy for the next student to use the center.

Step Four: Add It To The Rotation

Once you’ve had a chance to explain the activity to your students, it’s time for them to get to work!

Students will choose a bunny task card and name the picture that the bunny is holding. As they say the word, students will identify the beginning sound and the ending sound that they hear. Once they have identified the sounds, they will find the correct lettered ears to match the bunny.

The final step is to record the letters or the whole word on a recording sheet. Students will repeat this process for each of the bunny task cards. It’s always so motivating for students to see the table fill up with their completed bunnies.

More Ways to Use This Easter Activity

Once you have this activity downloaded and prepped, you can use it in other parts of your daily routine! This activity is very flexible!

  • Morning Work: This is a fun activity to have available for your students to work on in the morning as they arrive. Building the bunnies is an engaging activity to help students get excited for a day of learning.
  • Early Finishers: If you have activity options for early finishers, this Easter center could be a fun, seasonal addition to the rotation. Students can quietly match the ears to the bunnies while they wait for the next classroom activity to begin.
  • Classroom Party: Do you have some fun Easter activities in your classroom the day before the holiday weekend? This center activity would make a great rotation for your classroom party! It’s a touch of holiday fun while keeping learning on track.

For any of these options, you can choose to use the recording sheet as part of the activity or just use the task cards and letters. Whatever works best for you and your students!
