The beginning of the year is such an exciting time in first grade! Students are eager to get started after a jam-packed year of learning and growing in kindergarten. It’s a good time to help students review what they learned in kindergarten and get ready for another year of learning. One way that you can do this is with a homework routine! In this post, I’m going to share some first grade homework for August that you can use to jump-start your routine at the beginning of the year!

First Grade Homework Ideas for August
If you plan to use homework as part of your daily routine, it’s helpful to get it started as soon as possible. This helps students build that routine and responsibility early in the year so that it can become habit. However, it can be hard to decide what skills to review and practice with homework activities because there are so many to choose from!
To help you narrow it down, here are some of my favorite things to include in a first grade homework routine in August:
School-Themed Activities
One of my favorite things about homework is that it’s an easy way to bring some seasonal fun and engagement to the daily learning routine. School-themed activities are a fun addition to homework in August, as students are getting back into the swing of things.

For example, this book-themed activity gives your first graders the chance to review numbers, including number formation. Each bookshelf on the page has five numbers that are out of order. Students will write the numbers on the books from least to greatest.
Number Sense Practice
There are many ways that you can use your daily homework printables to help students review number sense concepts. From counting to identifying numbers to representing numbers in different ways, it’s important for first graders to sharpen these skills at the beginning of the school year.

This ten frame matching activity is a fun way for students to practice identifying numbers to ten as well as counting using a ten frame. After identifying the numbers written on each bus, students will match the correct ten frame to each bus. Students also need to cut out these ten frames from the worksheet, for some extra fine motor practice.
Phonics Review
After learning so many new phonics skills in kindergarten, the beginning of first grade is the perfect time for review! Your homework routine is a great way to add some engaging practice with letter sounds and decoding words.

This word search is just one way that you can make phonics review fun and engaging for your students with homework activities. Students will sound out and write the CVC word next to each picture at the bottom of the page. Then they will search for those words in the puzzle, coloring them as they find each one. Puzzles and games are such an easy way to make homework more engaging and developmentally appropriate!
Sentence Writing Practice
It’s not uncommon for young first graders to need a little extra practice with writing in order to rebuild their stamina after summer break! You can incorporate this writing practice into your homework routine so students can get the repetition they need at their own pace.

This sentence unscramble activity is an example of a fun writing task that students enjoy! They will take the scrambled words written on each pencil and form a sentence. They can use their knowledge of sentence conventions to find the first and last words based on capitalization and punctuation. Once they know what the sentence should say, they will write it on the line. This is a fun way for them to practice reading, sentence conventions, and fine motor skills!
More Ways to Use Homework Printables
Even if your students aren’t quite ready for a homework routine in August, homework worksheets can be used in so many ways at the beginning of the school year!

- Morning Work: Get your arrival routine up and running smoothly with independent work activities. Since these homework activities are designed to review skills that students have already learned, they make great seat work for your morning routine! Students are able to sit down and immediately begin their morning work activities with minimal directions or reminders from you!
- Centers: Do you need a few extra stations for your centers rotation? Homework printables are a great low-prep option! Students are able to work independently on both math and literacy skills with engaging printable activities.
- Early Finishers: As students get back into the classroom routine, there might often be students who need a little extra time to get things done. It’s helpful to have some no-prep printables on hand for early finishers to work on while they wait for the next classroom activity to begin. Homework printables are perfect for this! You can print and assemble them into packets so students can just pull out their early finisher activities any time they have a few extra minutes.
