4 Christmas Pattern Activities for Kindergarten
These four Christmas pattern activities are similar, but the different options allow you to differentiate this activity for the students in your classroom. Let’s take a closer look at these free printables:
1. Fingerprint Pattern Cards
The first activity option gives students the chance to create their own patterns by creating lights with their fingerprints using paints! (I prefer this washable paint from Amazon because it comes in plenty of vibrant colors and it’s easy for students to clean off their hands.)
Students will receive a card with a Christmas light wire that’s missing its lights! Students will then decide what type of pattern they want to make and what colors they want to use. Then, they can use their fingers to add the Christmas lights to the empty spaces on the wire.
You can mount these cards to colorful construction paper or have students create several strips with different pattern types. Once they’re dry, you can staple them together and create a little pattern booklet for students to take home.
2. Fingerprint Pattern Worksheet
If you want to make sure your students practice specific pattern types, you can use this fingerprint pattern worksheet instead. It comes with four empty Christmas light wires that have each been assigned a different type of pattern.
Students can use different colors of paint to add lights on each wire that will match the pattern type. These colorful pattern worksheets look great on display! You can even mount them on festive construction paper to help them stand out on the wall or bulletin board.
These fingerprint pattern activities can also be used in different ways if you don’t have paint on hand. You could print and laminate the task cards or worksheets for a reusable patterning activity! Students can use colorful pompoms or other manipulatives to create their patterns on the task card of the worksheet. You can give students tweezers for students to transfer the pom poms for extra fine motor practice.
3. Christmas Light Pattern Cards
Instead of using paint, students can also color Christmas lights in patterns! These task cards are very similar to the fingerprint pattern cards, except that they have blank Christmas bulbs for students to color in a pattern of their choice.
These task cards are very versatile since they don’t require the setup and clean-up of paint. That means there are many different ways you can incorporate this pattern activity into your December lesson plans. Whether it’s centers or morning work, these activities are easy to get started whenever you need them!
4. Christmas Light Pattern Worksheet
This is another chance for students to color patterns of different types. Just like the painting activity, each strand of blank light bulbs is assigned a different pattern for students to replicate. You can give students the chance to practice color words by inviting them to share their patterns with other peers.
The coloring activities also give students the chance to practice their fine motor skills and pincer grasp. It’s so helpful to give students engaging activities for practicing these important skills!
If you would like to make these Christmas light coloring activities reusable, you could laminate them or put them in a sheet protector. Students could then color in the bulbs using dry erase marker. This is an easy way to create a reusable activity for your math centers!
