Sight Word Homework for Kindergarten

Are you looking for a fun and engaging way to help your students get more practice with high frequency words? This sight word homework for kindergarten is a great option! Students will love completing these take-home sight word activities!

The Benefits of Practicing Sight Words at Home

A homework routine can be a helpful addition to your kindergarten curriculum, especially a routine that includes sight word practice! Practicing sight words at home can give students the chance to get more of the repetition they need to master sight words. Homework is also a great way to involve parents in the learning process as students become more responsible learners.

Sight Word Homework for Kindergarten

I have put together a low-prep option for sight word homework that has enough variations to last all year long! It is a tri-fold printable that can focus on either five or ten sight words. Students can work on the activities each evening and then return it at the end of the week.

I’ll show you how easy it is to put together this take-home sight word practice:

Step One: Add Sight Words

After deciding if you want to focus on five sight words or ten, the first step is to type in the sight words. At the beginning of the PDF is a form where you can type each sight word in lowercase letters, uppercase letters, and scrambled. There is also an optional space where you can label the week number and the date range.

Step Two: Print the Outer Page

Once you’ve added the words, the outer page is ready to print. This page includes the cover, which lists the sight words for the week, the list number, and date range. There is also space for the student name and parent signature.

The other half of the outer page includes a list for students to practice their sight word fluency. There are stars for students to color each time they read the words.

Step Three: Choose an Activity for the Inner Page

The next step is to choose a sight word activity for the inner page. Each inner page has space for the students to practice writing each sight word, but then the rest of the inner page is devoted to a fun sight word practice activity. You can choose which type of activity you’d like students to do. Each activity also comes with multiple variations, so you will have enough unique activities to last every week of the school year.

Here are the activities you can choose from:

  • Mystery Picture: Students will color in each square in a grid based on the sight word coloring key, revealing a mystery picture! (There are eight different mystery pictures to choose from.)
  • Secret Code: Each letter in the sight word is written in code and students will use the code to figure out which sight word it is! They will write the correct sight word on the line. (There are six unique codes to choose from.)
  • Unscramble and Match: Students will unscramble the sight word and draw a line to the correctly-spelled word. (There are five variations of this activity.)
  • Find and Color: This is a color-by-code picture that students can complete using the key provided. (This resource has eight unique pictures to choose from.)
  • Trace and Color: For this activity, students will trace the word and then color each circle containing that sight word.
  • Search and Color: This is another color-by-code activity where students will find each instance of the sight word in a scene and then color it according to the key. You can choose from five different scenes for students to color.

Step Four: Create Tri-Fold

After choosing which inner page you’d like to use for the week, just print it off and you’ll be ready to create the tri-fold! Simply copy the two pages onto one piece of paper and then fold it brochure style.

Step Five: Send Home with Students

The final step is to send the tri-fold home with students! The activities are intended to be developmentally appropriate so they can be completed with minimal adult support. You don’t want a homework routine to become a burden for your students and their families!

That is why this setup is so nice for weekly homework! Students are able to pick and choose which part of the tri-fold they’d like to complete each night and then return it at the end of the week.
