A Fun and Inclusive Father’s Day Craft

As teachers, we know that our students come from diverse family backgrounds. For holidays like Father’s Day, it’s important to be sensitive so that all students feel included in the festivities. If you choose to acknowledge Father’s Day in your classroom, it’s a good idea to think about the individual circumstances of each of your students before making your plans. One way that you can be inclusive with Father’s Day activities is with a craft project. Since crafts are easily customized, your students can create a project that celebrates any of the special men or father figures in their lives. I’m going to share an inclusive Father’s Day craft that you can use in your kindergarten classroom.

Inclusive Father's Day Craft for Kindergarten

Inclusive Father’s Day Craft

This 3D tie craft is a fun option for students to create for Father’s Day. The best part is that it’s super easy to put together!

Step One: Gather Materials

For this 3D tie craft, you will need:

  • Tie templates printed onto colored construction paper
  • Father’s Day greetings printed onto white paper
  • Tie backing printed onto white card stock (I have several options to choose from)
  • Twine, ribbon, or yarn to create the tie
  • Hole punch
  • Scissors, glue, and coloring supplies

Once you have all of your supplies gathered, it’s time to assemble the 3D tie!

Step Two: Assemble the Tie

First, students will cut out multiple tie shapes. Depending on the needs of your students, you could pre-cut the ties so the students can focus on the assembly. Students will decorate a greeting to attach to each tie. One says “I Love You”, one has a Father’s Day greeting, and so on.

Then, students will assemble the 3D tie by gluing the back half of one tie onto the back half of another. Students will fold the tie pieces in half in order to make it easier to see how it all fits together.

Step Three: Attach a Back

The back of the tie physically pulls the tie together and provides an opportunity for a special Father’s Day greeting. This is the part of the craft where students can customize it for the special person in their life, including Father, Grandpa, and Uncle.

Different name options for Father's Day tie craft

In addition to options for different people, the back of the tie also comes with a variety of different formats to choose from.

  • All About ________: This option makes a special keepsake and serves as a fun snapshot from kindergarten. Students will fill in the blanks based on what they know about their dad, uncle, or grandpa. It’s always fun to see what students come up with!
  • What I Love About _______: This option is a simple list with five blank spaces for students to fill in. They can share five things they love about the special person they’re honoring. The blanks are large enough that students can either write or draw their messages on this template.
  • A Letter to ________: Finally, this option is great for your students who are ready for a little more writing. This template includes writing lines for students to write a letter to their dad, uncle, or grandpa. This is a fun way for students to practice communicating through letter writing!

Once students have had a chance to choose a back for their tie, they will fill it in and then glue it to the back of the 3D tie that they’ve already assembled.

Step Four: Add Ribbon

The final step is to turn it into a wearable tie! Simply hole punch the left and right side of the top of the tie, leaving space to add a ribbon to the craft. You could use ribbon, twine, or yarn – whatever you have on hand!

That’s it! This craft is always a hit, especially if you’re hosting a Father’s Day celebration in your classroom. Students can have their special guests wear the ties throughout the event. Otherwise, students can take them home once they’re completed. They always think it’s fun to wear the ties home from school so they don’t get squashed in their backpacks.

More Father’s Day Craft Ideas

If you’re looking for even more Father’s Day craft ideas, be sure to check out these other two options!

Father’s Day Tool Belt Craft

Students can create this tool belt card that’s another fun twist on the “All About ____” questionnaires that are so popular around Father’s Day. Each tool has a sentence frame with a different question that you might see on one of those “All About Dad” questionnaires. Students can fill in the blanks and color the tools before adding them to the tool belt.

This craft also includes options for uncle and grandpa, so it’s another inclusive craft idea for Father’s Day. The final project is so fun for students to present to the special father figures in their lives!

Father’s Day Toolbox

This is another fun Father’s Day card option for students to create. It uses the same tools as the tool belt craft pictured above, but they are tucked inside a toolbox craft that students will assemble. The “Happy Father’s Day” on the front of the toolbox can be swapped out for “Thanks Uncle” or “Thanks Grandpa” in order to be more inclusive.
