April is an exciting month! Students have come back from spring break and the countdown to summer has begun! It’s helpful to have a wide variety of activities to keep students engaged in learning when energy levels are running high. In this post, I’m sharing some of my favorite kindergarten activities for April that will make it easier to put together your spring lesson plans.

8 Engaging Kindergarten Activities for April
1. Spring Centers
You can bring some seasonal fun to your classroom with engaging spring centers. Students can practice a variety of literacy and math skills using themed activities. From building flowers to catching insects, students will enjoy these spring activities during literacy and math centers.

I have an entire blog post that’s full of fun spring centers for kindergarten, so be sure to check it out for even more literacy and math center ideas.
2. Rainbow Sight Word Practice
Add some spring fun to sight word practice in April with rainbow writing! Students will start by rainbow writing the focus sight word on each of the clouds. Then, they will fill in each color of the rainbow by writing the word multiple times. Since students are so excited to fill in the rainbow, they get many repetitions with the sight word without realizing they’re hard at work!

You can grab one of my free rainbow sight word templates, if you’d like to give it a try!
3. Easter Crafts
Easter crafts can also be a fun addition to your April lesson plans. Students can practice following directions while also improving their hand strength and coordination.

4. Easter Thematic Unit
A thematic unit can add even more Easter fun to your classroom in April. Students can enjoy a variety of learning activities during a week of themed learning.

Students can complete engaging activities to go along with Easter-themed read alouds like Bunny Trouble and Peter Rabbit.

Your students might also love to use Easter candy to help them practice graphing. After sorting candies by color, students can graph the results and analyze their data. They can also practice addition by combining two different colors. It’s fun for them to see which combination of colors results in the largest number!

These are just a few examples of the activities you could include in an Easter unit. Be sure to check out my post that’s full of activities for an Easter thematic unit.
5. Insect Thematic Unit
An insect unit is another great addition to your April lesson plans! There are many ways that you can add some insect fun to your daily learning routine.

You can start the unit by reading nonfiction books together as a class to learn about insects. Students can then complete a flipbook to document what they’ve learned.

You can also use insects as inspiration for literacy and math practice. For example, students can practice teen numbers by counting ants. Be sure to check out my post that’s full of activity ideas for an insect unit.
6. Spring Thematic Unit
Another thematic unit that I love to add to April lesson plans is a spring unit! Students love to learn all about spring with engaging activities.

After learning about the season of spring, students can create a flip book to document their favorite facts about spring.

Since spring is a season of plant growth, this is a great time to learn about the life cycle of a plant. Students can even complete a bean plant experiment to see the plant life cycle in action!

I’ve put together a blog post with more details about fun activities you can include in a spring unit for kindergarten, if you’re looking for more lesson planning inspiration.
7. Earth Day Activities
With Earth Day on April 22nd, it’s always a great idea to plan some activities and crafts that will help students learn more about taking care of the earth.

You can start by teaching students more about Earth Day, including the Three R’s: Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Students can create their own books to help them deepen their understanding of each term. The pages include spaces for students to sort pictures that go with each of the Three R’s.

After learning all about Earth Day and how to take care of the planet, students can also complete a fun Earth Day craft. Students will use dot painting to fill in the earth template with color. Then they will add the details to create an Earth Day buddy. This craft can sit up on its own, so it makes a fun classroom decoration!

From centers to fast finishers, you’ll be able to use these sprint-themed literacy and math activities to keep students motivated to practice these skills. This will help your classroom run more smoothly all month long!
Free Spring Center
To give you a head start on your lesson planning for April, I’ve put together an Easter-themed center that you can download for free! Your students will be able to practice beginning and ending sounds by adding the correct ears to each rabbit. This is a fun addition to your literacy centers!
