Using Kindergarten Homework in January

Homework can be a very helpful addition to your daily routine in January. Students have just come back from the long winter break and likely need some refreshers with key concepts. In addition to reviewing these concepts during the school day, students can also get some additional practice outside of the classroom.

After winter break, everyone is eager to get back into a normal routine. Our young students thrive on consistency and predictability! This is another reason why homework can be helpful, since it helps students and their families can get back into the habit of daily skill practice at home.

Ideas for January Kindergarten Homework

With so many possible skills for students to review and practice, it can be a challenge to narrow it down and create a plan for your homework routine. I’ve compiled some ideas for skills that are great to practice with homework. Hopefully these ideas will help you streamline your planning and save some prep time!

Counting

It’s helpful for kindergarten students to practice counting with one-to-one correspondence, especially after winter break. You can make it fun by having them count and color a variety of themed objects, like this winter counting activity. There’s also space for them to practice number formation by writing the number of each object on the corresponding line.

Teen Numbers

As the school year progresses, kindergarteners begin to learn about teen numbers! In January, the homework routine can help students practice identifying, counting, and writing teen numbers. This is really helpful since learning about teen numbers can be tricky for some students! This cut-and-paste activity includes a space for students to write the numbers after attaching them to the page in order.

Addition

By January, students have started building a foundation for addition. They can continue to build on this foundation with fun seasonal homework activities! For example, this activity gives students the chance to build three snowmen. They will match the addition equations on each snowball to the snowman with the correct sum.

Subtraction

If your students have been learning about subtraction, your homework routine is a great way for them to review this skill. In this activity, students will cross out the correct number of winter objects to model the subtraction equation. They will then determine how many are left and write the answer on the line. This is a great visual for students as they learn how to subtract!

Graphing

Another math concept that’s fun for students to practice with homework is graphing! Students can cut and paste winter objects onto the graph, then write and solve addition equations based on the data.

Word Recognition

Math isn’t the only thing your students can review during their homework time! They can also improve their word recognition skills with literacy homework. For example, they can practice reading a winter sentence with CVC words and high frequency words.

Sentence Formation

With the same activity, students can also practice sentence formation by writing and unscrambling the sentence they just read. This is a great way for them to review conventions, since they can look at the capitalization and punctuation for clues to put the words in the correct place.

Editable Sight Word Activities

One of my favorite additions to the homework printables is the editable sight word activities. This January homework printables include 3 different editable sight word activities. This allows you to add the sight words your students are working on to fit your class. All you need to do is type the sight word in the given boxes and the activity will be created instantly. Just type and print!

5 Ways to Use January Homework Printables

Even if you don’t have a homework routine for your students, these seasonal printables can still come in handy as you lesson plan for January! Here are a few ways that these low-prep math and literacy activities can add important practice to your school day.

1. Skill Review – As I’ve already mentioned, January is an important time for skill review! You can choose specific printables based on the skills your students need to review after winter break.

2. Morning Work – These print-and-go printables are a great option for morning work! Students will be able to sit down and get right to work when they arrive at school.

3. Centers – Since these homework activities are reviewing skills that students have already been taught, they are perfect for literacy and math centers! Students will be able to work independently at a station with these printables.

4. Early Finishers – These engaging seasonal activities can be fun for students to work on while they wait for the next classroom activity to begin. You could even create early finisher packets that students keep in their desks or cubbies.

5. Sub Plans – With everyone bringing back “souvenir” illnesses from their holiday travel, you might find yourself making sub plans for a sick day. These low-prep printables can save you time! You can easily prep these activities that will be easy for your substitute teacher to complete with the class.

No matter how you decide to use these homework activities, I know you’ll be able to save a lot of planning time! Plus, your students will love reviewing math and literacy skills with these fun and engaging winter activities.
