Using Kindergarten Homework in December

Lesson planning in December can be fun, since there are so many exciting memories to make with your kindergarteners! On the other hand, it can also be a bit of a challenge because there are so many important things to cover before winter break. This is when a homework routine can come in handy! Here are a few reasons why you might want to consider starting (or maintaining) your homework routine in December:

  • Review Skills Before Break – Your students are preparing for a long break, so it’s helpful to give them as many opportunities to review important skills as possible.
  • Maintain Learning Routine – There are so many schedule interruptions in the weeks leading up to winter break! Maintaining your homework routine is an easy way to maintain consistency for your young students.
  • Channel Seasonal Excitement -You can almost feel the excited energy in the room as winter break gets closer and closer! Using holiday-themed activities for homework can help your students channel some of that seasonal excitement into meaningful skill practice.

Ideas for December Kindergarten Homework

With so much to review and so little time, it can be overwhelming to decide what activities to send as homework during December. Here are some activity ideas that won’t overburden your students or their families during this busy season. Plus, they will help your students review important math and literacy skills before winter break.

CVC Words

By December, students have been working hard to apply their phonics knowledge to word reading. You can help them practice reading CVC words through your homework routine. For example, students can read a list of words and draw a line to the corresponding picture.

Sight Word Practice

Your homework routine can also give students the chance to get more practice reading high frequency words. By using a variety of activities, students will stay engaged in this important skill practice! For example, this homework activity invites students to choose the sight word that makes the most sense in the sentence frame. They can color the correct word and write it on the blank, giving them another chance to review the word. The picture clues can also help students be more independent with this task.

Writing

Students’ fine motor skills have been growing by leaps and bounds by December! This means your homework activities can begin to include more writing practice. In the case of the sight word activity above, students can write the sentence after they have identified the missing sight word.

Counting

As the year progresses, students can continue to improve their counting skills. For example, they can practice skip counting by 10. In this activity, students can color, cut, and paste the numbers in the correct order as they practice counting by ten.

Number Formation

You can also incorporate more fine motor practice into your math homework with number formation practice! In the activity pictured above, students can then practice writing the numbers after putting them in the correct numerical order. They can continue to practice their fine motor skills by coloring a group of ten gingerbread men.

Addition

Finally, addition is another important math skill that your students can practice with developmentally-appropriate homework. In this activity, students will count the number of dots on each side of the domino, then write and solve an addition equation to model the total number of dots. This is also a great way for students to practice subitizing since they will start to look at the groups of dots and know what the number is without counting.
