November always feels like a turning point in the school year. The weather is getting colder and the end of the calendar year is rapidly approaching. On top of that, it feels like the pace of the school year is kicked up a notch when the calendar flips to November. During such a busy month, it’s even more important to maintain predictable learning routines for our students. This includes a homework routine! In this post, I’m sharing some tips and printables to help you plan kindergarten homework for November.

Using Kindergarten Homework in November

By November, the holiday season has officially begun! You just finished up your Halloween celebrations and are looking forward to Thanksgiving. There are many reasons why a homework routine can be a helpful addition to your November lesson plans

  • Maintain Daily Routine – With the fast pace of November, a predictable learning routine becomes more important than ever! Young kindergarten students thrive on consistency, so maintaining a homework routine is important in November.
  • Get Ready for Break – Not only are students preparing for Thanksgiving break, they also have a long winter break just a few weeks later! A homework routine can help you ensure that students have had a chance to sharpen their skills before leaving for the break.
  • Seasonal Fun – November is such a fun month with all of the fall festivities! Homework printables are an easy way to bring a touch of seasonal fun to your learning routine.

Ideas for November Kindergarten Homework

Kindergarten students have learned so many new things by November, it can be a challenge to decide what to have them review as homework! The activities you send home should be developmentally appropriate, so the homework routine doesn’t burden students or their families.

Here are just a few examples of homework tasks that are perfect for math and literacy review in November:

Phonemic Awareness

Students need to continue to maintain a foundation of phonemic awareness throughout the school year. Homework can help you incorporate this important review into your daily routine.

For example, this turkey-themed activity gives students the chance to listen for and identify ending sounds. They will name the picture on each turkey feather, identifying the ending sound that they hear. If the ending sound matches the letter on the turkey, they will color the feather. If not, they will leave it blank.

Letter and Sound Identification

Activities like the turkey worksheet above can also help students practice letter and sound identification. While students have come a long way in learning the alphabet by November, they can often benefit from additional review! Any opportunity they have to identify the names and sounds of letters is beneficial for kindergarten students.

Number Sense

Homework can also give your students a chance to improve their foundational number sense skills through consistent review. For example, this counting activity can give students the chance to count by tens in a fun, seasonal way. This cut-and-paste activity also adds some fine motor practice to the homework routine.

Patterns

One of my favorite math skills to review in November is patterning! Turkey feathers are perfect for coloring in different pattern types. This homework activity invites students to color turkey feathers in a pattern of their choice and then identify the type of pattern that they created.

5 Ways to Use Homework Worksheets for November

Even if you don’t send worksheets home with your students, homework printables can still be a helpful addition to your November lesson plans!

  1. Morning Work – Since homework is intended to be review, this makes homework printables perfect for morning work. Students can work on these activities independently when they arrive in the classroom in the morning.
  2. Centers – These printables are also perfect to use at your literacy and math center rotations, since students are able to complete the review tasks with minimal assistance.
  3. Early Finishers – You can staple these seasonal worksheets into packets that students can keep in their cubbies or desks. They can quietly get started on their packets when they have finished their other work a little bit early.
  4. Flex Time – As the pace of the school year picks up, there are often unexpected pockets of time during the day. Whether it’s an assembly that ends early or a change in the daily schedule, you might find yourself with a few extra minutes. These low-prep and engaging printables can come in handy!
  5. Sub Plans – Having a few low-prep printables on hand can also come in handy as you enter flu season. You’ll have a variety of engaging activities on hand to add to your sub plans if you need to take a sick day. Since the homework printables focus on skills that students need to review, the sub won’t have to worry about introducing brand new concepts to your class while you’re gone.
