Using Kindergarten Homework in October

October is an exciting month in the kindergarten classroom! Students have been working hard to learn foundational math and literacy skills while getting the hang of the daily learning routine. With all of the excitement of Halloween at the end of the month, some seasonal homework can be a great tool for encouraging students to practice literacy and math skills. Here are just a few reasons why homework can be such a helpful learning tool in October:

  • Channel Seasonal Excitement: Homework printables are an easy way to include a bit of seasonal fun to your students’ learning routines. They can channel some of their excitement for the upcoming holiday into worthwhile skill practice.
  • Review Foundational Skills: As the school year progresses, students will be building on the foundational skills that they learned at the beginning of the year. Homework gives students the chance to keep these skills sharp so they’re ready for future instruction.
  • Maintain Learning Routine: As we rapidly approach the holiday season, it’s helpful to maintain a predictable homework routine for our students. Young kindergarteners thrive on routine, especially when there’s excitement in the air!

Ideas for October Kindergarten Homework

Choosing developmentally appropriate activities is one of the most important parts of planning kindergarten homework. The activities you send home with your students shouldn’t be time-consuming or difficult. They should just be short review activities that allow students to maintain a simple homework routine.

Here are a few examples of math and literacy skills that your students could practice at home during the month of October.

Number Identification

By October, students have been able to practice numbers one to ten in many different ways. Your homework routine can give them another opportunity to review number identification while also practicing additional math concepts.

Ghost theme number identification and comparison activity

For example, this comparison activity has students identify two numbers and then decide which is greater. This helps students practice identifying and comparing numbers in one seasonal activity. They will have fun creating a page full of colorful ghosts!

Number Sense

Kindergarteners can also continue to practice number sense in October. Representing numbers in many different ways allows students to strengthen their understanding of numbers. If you use a number of the day routine with number boards, this activity will be very familiar to your students.

Pumpkin themed number sense activity

This particular homework activity has students trace and write a number, then fill in a ten frame to represent the number. For a seasonal twist, they can also cut and paste a group of pumpkins to match each number on the page. This adds a little bit of extra fine motor practice, which is another important skill that students need to practice early in the school year.

Counting

Just like number identification, students have been working hard to count with one-to-one correspondence since the beginning of the school year. Homework activities in October can give students the chance to keep those skills sharp!

A bat themed counting activity

For this counting activity, students will count the number of dots in two different ten frames. Once they have identified the number of dots, they will color the bat that has more. This is also great practice with subitizing, since students can see at a glance which ten frame has more.

Beginning Sounds

October homework can also include helpful literacy review! In this activity, students will practice their phonemic awareness by identifying the beginning sounds in words.

Falling Beginning Sounds Activity

Students can name the picture on each leaf, then color it according to the key. Each beginning sound is represented by a different color. By the time the students finish the activity, they will have a fun fall-themed picture!

Letter and Sound Identification

This beginning sound activity gives students the chance to practice letter and sound recognition. Each lettered pumpkin wagon has a row of pictures for students to identify. They will color the pumpkins that have pictures beginning with that letter.

More Ways to Use Kindergarten Homework

Even if you don’t send work home with your students, homework printables can still come in handy during the busy month of October! Since these activities are designed to be developmentally-appropriate review activities, you could use them during any part of your daily routine when students need to work independently. This could include morning work, literacy centers, math centers, or even early finisher activities.

No matter how you choose to use homework printables, they will add meaningful skill practice to your classroom with a touch of seasonal fun.
