November Literacy Centers for Kindergarten
By November, your young learners will be ready to practice a variety of literacy skills independently during centers time. They will love these literacy activities with a Thanksgiving twist!
Beginning and Ending Sounds
If your students are ready to start matching letters to beginning and ending sounds, there are a variety of activities to help them practice this skill! The Gobbling Sounds center has students choose a card, name the picture, and then write the letter that makes the same beginning sound. Students can also match letter cards to words with a coordinating beginning sound during the Thankful Beginning Sounds activity.
Your students can also match pictures to their correct ending sounds in the Trotting to the End activity. Students will give each turkey a pair of sneakers with an ending sound that matches the picture on the turkey card. Students can also complete an Ending Sounds Mystery Picture using their knowledge of ending sounds.
If your students are ready to identify both the beginning and ending sounds of CVC words, they can set the Thanksgiving table in a fun literacy center. They will add the correct fork and spoon to each plate to match the beginning and ending sounds.
Letter Identification
Students can practice letter identification in two different ways using these November centers for kindergarten. First, they can match uppercase and lowercase letters in the Wishing for Letters activity. Then they can identify the missing letter in an alphabetical sequence of four letters.
Sight Words
In the Gobbling Sight Words activity, your class will love spelling sight words by giving each turkey the correct feathers! They might also enjoy Cooking Up Sight Words by unscrambling the letters on each turkey card to form a sight word.
Finally, students can apply their knowledge of sight words as they read a variety of word cards to unscramble and assemble sentences.
CVC Words
Your students will love practicing CVC words with these fun centers! In the Falling Words activity, they can use leaf letter cards to spell a CVC word that matches the picture on each tree.
The Turkey Word Match game is a fun way for students to practice reading CVC words. They can take turns finding picture cards to match each word card.
Rhyming
During the Thankful Rhymes center, students will match a variety of picture cards based on rhyming. Students will also match these rhyming words on their recording sheets.
November Math Centers for Kindergarten
The Thanksgiving fun doesn’t have to stop with literacy practice! There are many different ways that your students can practice math skills with these hands-on centers for November.
Number Sense
Your students can practice identifying different representations of numbers with these fun centers! In the Roll and Find activity, students can roll a die with different ten frames, then color in the corresponding number on their recording sheet. Students can also practice matching ten frames to numbers in the Hats Off for Ten Frames center.
Students will also practice representing numbers in a variety of ways in the Numbers Are Sailing math center. For each number, students can match the correct ten frame, dice, tally marks, and number word.
Counting
The best way to master counting and one-to-one correspondence is through repetition and practice! That is why these November centers for kindergarten contain a variety of counting activities to keep students engaged in this repetition.
Students can reveal a mystery picture as they put together the Counting Dice Mystery Picture. Students can practice their fine motor skills as they add the correct number of clothespin “feathers” to a turkey in the How Many Feathers center.
Your students will also love to race to be the first person to uncover all of the owls on their number line in the Whoo is There center. They will roll dice, count the dots, and then uncover the corresponding number. Another fun activity for students is the Race to 30 game. Students will roll dice and move their markers either forward or back based on the key. The first one to 30 is the winner!
Finally, the Thanksgiving search is a fun activity that has students find cards with Thanksgiving objects. For each card, they will count the objects and write the number on their recording sheets. This center is a great search/write the room activity!
Ordering Numbers
Another important math skill for students to practice is ordering numbers. The Order Numbers Mystery Picture is a fun way for students to practice this skill.
Your students will also like the Missing Dinner Order activity, where they find the missing number in each sequence. The Puzzle Time center is a fun self-correcting activity that has students put numbers in order. As they put each number in the correct place, they will be assembling the strips of a puzzle.
Comparing Numbers
In addition to ordering numbers, kindergartners also need to practice comparing numbers. In the Let’s Find Less activity, your students can select a card with two groups of Thanksgiving items. After counting and recording the number of items in each group, students will color the picture that has less.
