Groundhog Day Ideas and Crafts

Are you looking for some Groundhog Day ideas? Groundhog Day is right around the corner and I get excited each year for this day to come. This is usually the time of year that I am pretty much over the cold weather and being inside!

I love adding Groundhog Day activities and crafts to the classroom leading up to the day to enjoy this time with our little learners! Imagine the excitement they have on Groundhog Day to see if their predictions are correct! It truly makes Groundhog Day even more fun!

This day is also the perfect opportunity to practice making predictions, getting results, adding new vocabulary words, and hands-on activities to your plans!

What do you think Punxsutawney Phil will announce? 6 more weeks of winter or an early spring?

To be honest, I still find myself excited to see what Phil will see on Groundhog Day.

Groundhog Day Ideas for Kindergarten

Sometimes Groundhog Day lands on the weekend. What is great about these activities is that you can do some of them on the days leading up to Groundhog Day and you do some of the activities on the day of Groundhog Day. Even if Groundhog Day is on the weekend, you can still discuss the results from the weekend, watch a replay of Punxsutawney Phil, and complete the rest of the activities.

3D Groundhog Craft

This groundhog craft is not only adorable, but he can sit just about anywhere! Students have a blast with the end results and especially seeing that their Groundhog Day craft can stand up.

A Groundhog Day craft where students made a 3D groundhog that can stand up. On the groundhog they wrote what happens when the groundhog does and does not see his shadow. They also wrote what the groundhog saw and if we get 6 more weeks of winter or an early spring.

Students get to write about what happens when the groundhog does or does not see his shadow. They also get to write about whether or not Phil did see his shadow on Groundhog Day.

All of this Groundhog Day information will be placed on the stomach of the groundhog craft.

Groundhog Day Informational Flip Book

This interactive flipbook allows students to put all of their learning about Groundhog Day in one place.

Students get to glue pictures onto each page of the flipbook and fill in the blanks to show the who, what, where, when, and why of Groundhog Day.

Prediction Class Graph and Data

An example of what a completed class graph could look like when making predictions on whether the groundhog will or will not see his shadow on Groundhog Day.

Making a prediction about whether or not Phil the groundhog will see his shadow or not is so much fun. Now getting to see what our friends and our teacher predicts is even more fun!

This Groundhog Day prediction class graph allows students to display their prediction on whether they think the groundhog will or will not see his shadow.

I like to have one student come up at a time to place their prediction on the class graph.

This is the perfect opportunity to have students practice speaking complete sentences in front of the class. This can be a hard and scary thing to do at this age! Even if a student only says yes or no in front of the class, it is a huge deal and a wonderful start! I know I get nervous talking in front of large groups!

After everyone has their prediction on the class graph, you can discuss which prediction has more and less, count the predictions, and more!

Last, I like to add this Groundhog Day prediction data worksheet as a follow-up activity. This allows students to practice reading a graph and filling in their own graph and other information to match the class graph.

A data page that is a follow-up activity to a class prediction of whether or not the groundhog will see his shadow. Students use the class graph that was made to fill in this data page.

If you keep this class graph up until Groundhog Day, everyone will love to see whose prediction was correct!

Groundhog Day Student Book

This mini reader is a smaller version of the class book and will allow students to have their own book about Groundhog Day.

This mini reader comes with 2 options to choose from:

  • Option 1: A mini reader with complete sentences.
  • Option 2: A mini reader with some blanks in the sentences for students to fill in.

Groundhog Day Hat

This hat is so much fun to wear on Groundhog Day!

Students get to show their prediction of what the groundhog will see, the result, and if we will get 6 more weeks of winter or early spring.

A Groundhog Day hat that shows what students prediction is on whether Punxsutawney Phil will or will not see his shadow. It also has the results of Groundhog Day and what happens as a result. Students place whether there will be 6 more weeks of winter or an early spring.

I like to do this activity broken up into two days. We color the hats and make our predictions the first day. On the second day that we work on them, students write the result of what the groundhog saw and if there will be 6 more weeks of winter or early spring.

These hats are pretty fun for the teachers to wear too!😉

Vocabulary Cards for Groundhog Day

There are a lot of new words and vocabulary that go along with Groundhog Day. Throughout the Groundhog Day class book, there are vocabulary words that are placed in bold.

I placed all of those words on strips with an image to help show the meaning of the word. Adding pictures to vocabulary words is incredibly helpful for student understanding, learning, and confidence.

Vocabulary cards to go along with the new learning about Groundhog Day. These Groundhog Day vocabulary cards are perfect to add to a pocket chart or bulletin board to display.

You can place these vocabulary word strips on a pocket chart or bulletin board.

Groundhog Day Posters

Having visuals in your classroom for students provides so many benefits. Remembering what happens when Punxsutawney Phil does or does not see his shadow can be hard!

Groundhog Day posters to hang as visuals for students to understand that if the groundhog sees his shadow, they have have 6 more weeks of winter. If the groundhog does not see his shadow, they will have an early spring.
