February is another month that I love to include different themed units. From Valentine’s Day to President’s Day and American Symbols, there are lots of hands-on, engaging, and fun opportunities for students to explore various subjects while celebrating these special occasions. I am excited to share these February themes for kindergarten with you!

Why You Should Include Thematic Units in February

There are so many benefits for both you and your students when you include thematic units in your planning.

  • Making Connections- Through learning, students brains are constantly working to make connections from one experience to another. Using thematic units with learning allows this natural way of learning.
  • Engagement- Thematic units show us that learning can be fun! They allow students to dive deep into topics that they are interested in and passionate about. When teaching taps into students curiosity, they become more engaged and excited to want to learn more.
  • Planning- Having high-quality and standards-based units planned out for you will save you so much time when it comes to planning. You won’t need to spend hours looking for ideas and figuring out how to put all of them together. Everything is done for you and this will allow you to make teaching the units more fun for you.
  • Supports Different Learning Needs- Thematic units include different ways of learning through hands-on activities, crafts, games, STEM activities, and so much more. There are such a variety of skills taught within the units as well as well as different learning styles. Because of the variety, most if not all student’s learning needs are met with excitement!
  • So much more!- You can read more about the benefits of thematic units here.

Each month can include endless themes and I am excited to share some of my favorite February themes for kindergarten that I love to include.

3 February Themes for Kindergarten

Each theme is packed with tons of hands-on, engaging, math and literacy activities. There are crafts, anchor charts, and special treats too! I have included a unit-at-a-glance for you to use as a guide on how you can space out each activity throughout the week that the units are used. This will save you tons of time when planning!

Let’s dive into my favorite February themes for kindergarten.

1. Valentine’s Day

Kick off the month with Valentine’s Day activities that will warm their hearts. From creating heartfelt cards to engaging in sweet math exercises, these activities will not only foster creativity but also reinforce important math and literacy skills.

Here is a look at a few math and literacy activities included in my Valentine’s Day Unit.

We love reading ‘Froggy’ books and ‘Froggy’s First Kiss’ gets the class full of laughter. A fun activity I like to do is to pause in the story to have students make a prediction. Then, we come back together and finish the story to see if their predictions were correct.

Students get some great hands-on practice with subtraction while mailing hearts to solve the subtraction equations. This hands-on activity really allows students to see and understand that subtraction means taking away.

Another adorable Valentine’s story we like to read is ‘The Biggest Valentine Ever’. At the end of the story the main characters make a giant paper mouse out of hearts. Students get so excited when they get to make a paper mouse out of hearts just like the main characters from the story.

Learning is always more fun when candy is involved! Students get to practice creating and solving addition equations with the help of dice and a tasty treat.

Why write about one thing you love when you can write about 3 things you love and also teach about nouns at the same time? Students get to write about a person, place, and thing that they love and turn their writing into a 3D heart craft.

2. President’s Day

President’s Day activities will take your little ones on a journey through American history. They’ll learn about past presidents, engage in patriotic crafts, and understand the significance of this important holiday.

Here is a look at a few activities included in this President’s Day Unit.

Students get to have their very own election day where they get to experience the voting process. This is a day they won’t forget when they get their very own voter registration card, a ballot to vote in an easy to make voting booth, and an ‘I Voted’ coin that they can keep or pin onto their shirt.

Students will read nonfiction books about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Then, they get to complete an interactive book all about these two important past Presidents where they write facts they learned and include some fun crafts!

Time for some writing fun when student’s get to not only write about why they should be President, but they get to turn their writing into a fun voting booth craft. This is a huge hit when displayed as a bulletin in the classroom or hallway.

3. American Symbols

American Symbols activities allow students to explore iconic symbols that represent the United States’ history and culture. Through this interactive project, students gain a deeper understanding of their country’s heritage.

Rather than just read nonfiction books, I wanted to add a fun spin and have student’s create an interactive American symbols book. In this interactive book, students get to write facts or fill in the blanks about each American symbol.

They also get to add a large picture of the American symbol that they lift up to see the facts behind it.

Students are so proud of their hard work when these American symbols books are completed.
