February might be a short month, but there are so many fun and important things to do this month! In fact, it can feel like quite the challenge to fit everything into your daily kindergarten routine. In this post, I wanted to share some of my favorite February activities for kindergarten. With these engaging activities, you’ll be able to observe some of the February holidays while also focusing on important literacy and math skills.
Hands-On February Activities for Kindergarten
There are so many ways that you can make learning meaningful and memorable for your class. Your students will love these hands-on and engaging February activities for kindergarten!
Groundhog Day
Your students will love to start the month with some groundhog fun! I’m always so excited for Groundhog Day because it gives us an excuse to start dreaming of spring flowers and warmer days. That’s something I’m definitely ready for by the time February rolls around!
There are many ways that you can celebrate Groundhog Day in kindergarten. One of my favorites is this 3D groundhog craft! Students can document what happens when the groundhog does and doesn’t see his shadow. On the third portion of this craft, students will document whether or not Punxatawney Phil saw his shadow this year.
There are many other fun ways that you can celebrate this fun day with your students! Check out this post where I share more groundhog ideas and crafts for kindergarten.
100th Day of School
If your 100th day of school falls in February, you’ll definitely want to plan some literacy and math practice with a fun 100th day twist!
I like to give my students a paper wallet with a checklist of fun activities that they will complete on the 100th day of kindergarten. As students complete each activity, they will mark off the activity in their wallets and receive a pretend ten dollar bill. After all of the activities are complete, students will have $100 in their wallets and a fun memory of this special milestone.
Be sure to check out my post that’s full of 100th day of school activities for kindergarten. You’ll be able to take a closer look at each activity and download them if you’d like to use them in your classroom.
Valentine’s Day Unit
Valentine’s Day is another fun holiday to celebrate in kindergarten. Instead of trying to squeeze all of the valentine fun into one day, you could plan an entire unit study for kindergarten!
Students will enjoy comparing and contrasting two Valentine-themed stories. They will also have the chance to practice making predictions as they listen to one of the stories. The Valentine theme is also brought into literacy practice as students build CVC words, write sentences, identify sight words, and more!
The Valentine’s fun doesn’t have to stop with literacy practice! Students can also graph the results of a chocolate taste test, sort addition and subtraction sentences, and play fun math games with a Valentine twist! You can check out my Valentine’s Day unit post if you’d like to take a closer look at these activity ideas.
Valentine’s Day Centers
You can also add a hint of Valentine’s Day to your literacy and math center rotations during the month of February.
I have created a set of four FREE Valentine’s Day centers for kindergarten. Students can identify beginning sounds, match CVC words to pictures, demonstrate one-to-one correspondence, and complete addition problems.
Each Valentine’s Day center activity includes child-friendly illustrated instructions and a recording sheet to encourage independence and increase accountability. These activities are also perfect for morning tubs, early finishers, or small group instruction. President’s Day Activities
President’s Day is another February holiday that’s fun to observe in kindergarten. Students are always so excited to learn more about two presidents that are on our money!
There are many different President’s Day activities that you can use in your classroom. In fact, you’ll probably find enough for a President’s Day thematic unit! As students learn more about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, they can complete pages for their own President’s Day books. Your students will be so excited to take these books home to share with their families!
President’s Day is also a great time to teach students more about how presidents are elected. After reading “Duck for President” and “Grace for President” together as a class, students can complete writing activities to explain who they would vote for. You can even hold a class election! I have written an entire post with details about celebrating President’s Day and holding a classroom election. Be sure to check it out!
American Symbols Unit
In addition to learning about presidents and elections, February can be a great time to learn more about American symbols. Learning about different US symbols can help young students understand more about our nation’s history.
After reading a non-fiction book about an American symbol, students can color a picture of the symbol and also write about what they have learned. These pages can be put together in a very unique American symbols book that they can take home at the end of the unit.
Penguin Activities
February can also be a great month to learn about penguins! Even though we’re at the tail end of winter and longing for spring, penguins are a fun topic to learn about in February.
I have an entire thematic unit full of penguin activities for kindergarten. Students can practice CVC words, story elements, vocabulary, subtraction, and so much more in this engaging penguin unit study.
Students can even put together their own penguin books to read with their families. The best part is that the cute penguin craft on the front cover is made with heart shapes, which gives it a fun February twist!
