As the weather turns cooler and the leaves start to change color, our students start to get excited about Halloween! I like to use this seasonal excitement to keep students engaged in important literacy and math skill practice. These fun Halloween centers for kindergarten will grab your students’ attention during literacy and math stations.
Literacy Centers for Halloween
These fun Halloween literacy activities will help your students practice a variety of important skills.
Phonological and Phonemic Awareness
As fall progresses, your students will be ready to sort pictures based on the number of syllables they hear. Students can make a spooky train with the Syllables on Board activity. They will add picture cards to the train engine with the correct number of syllables. These picture cards also have the words written on them for students who are ready for that addition.
In the Cauldron of Rhymes activity, students will add a clothespin to the cauldron with a picture that rhymes with the picture held by the witch. This clip activity is great for fine motor practice!
Uppercase and Lowercase Letter Identification
Students can practice identifying and writing letters in the Colorful Bats center! Students can choose a card and practice tracing that letter in the same color as the bat. For an added challenge, students can put the letters in alphabetical order.
Students can also practice matching uppercase and lowercase letters with a fun Letter Match memory game and a Witches Broom Letter Match activity.
Beginning and Ending Sounds
There are a variety of activities to help students practice identifying sounds in words. They can identify initial sounds with a fun Beginning Sounds Bingo game or a Web of Beginning Sounds activity. Students can also apply their knowledge of beginning sounds to complete a festive mystery picture.
If your students are ready to listen for vowels at the beginning of words, they will love Trick or Treat for Vowels, where they will add candy to the correct trick or treat bag based on the initial vowel sound.
Don’t forget about ending sounds! Students will have fun creating candy corn by matching each picture with its correct ending sound.
Word Building
Students can apply all of their knowledge about letters and sounds by building words! They can sound out and spell CVC words by placing spooky cupcake letters on a CVC word mat.
Your kindergartners will also love building Pumpkin Sight Words by adding the correct pumpkins to match the sight word on each wagon.
Writing
Help your students practice their writing skills as they find and write a variety of Halloween-themed words.
Students can also practice writing sentences with a fun Sentence Unscramble activity! After putting the words in order to make a complete sentence, students can write the sentences on their recording sheets.
Math Centers for Halloween
Math practice can be fun and engaging with these Halloween-themed centers activities!
Counting and One-to-One Correspondence
There are so many fun Halloween objects to count! First, students can create bats by matching dots on one wing to the correct number on another in the Counting Bat Wings center. In the So Many Spiders activity, students can place the correct number of spiders on a web to model the number.
Instead of spiders, your students might prefer to count gumballs! In the Spooky Gumballs center, students will count the contents of a gumball machine and find the matching number. Your students can also practice identifying numbers modeled with finger counting. They will match puzzle pieces to the correct number in order to reveal a Halloween mystery picture!
Once your students have had plenty of practice with counting and one-to-one correspondence, they can practice counting on from a given number with this fun spider activity!
Number Sense
You can provide your students with extra number sense practice using the All About Numbers center. Students can show numbers 1-5 or 1-10 with dominoes, tally marks, blocks, and ten frames as they match ghosts to the correct haunted house.
If you’d like your students to have even more practice with ten frames, be sure to use the Mixing Up Ten Frames activity! Students will match each potion to the correct cauldron based on the ten frames.
Ordering Numbers
Give your students some extra practice with ordering numbers. In the Witches Order center, students will help each witch place her three pieces of numbered laundry on the clothesline in the correct order.
Students can also apply their knowledge of numerical order to a fun mystery puzzle. As they put the numbered pieces in order, they will reveal a festive picture! These puzzles vary in difficulty, with five, ten, and fifteen pieces.
Comparing Numbers
Students can practice comparing numbers with the Which is Bigger activity. After spinning two spider spinners, students will place the corresponding spider cards on a mat. Then they will count the spiders on each card to determine which contains a larger number of spiders.
Students can also practice finding smaller quantities in the Which is Less activity. After placing two cards on the mat, students will add the corresponding number of candy corn, then determine which side shows less.
Measurement and More!
In the Measure Up center, students will use a non-standard measurement tool (candy corn) to find the length of different Halloween-themed pictures.
Your students can also practice shape identification with the Sorting Shapes center. They will sort various 2D shapes to match the shaped pumpkins on each sorting mat.
Another activity that’s full of pumpkin fun is the Pumpkin Patterns math center. Students will continue a variety of different patterns with colored pumpkins. They can also create their own pumpkin patterns!
