The Benefits of Homework in April

A predictable homework routine can be such a helpful addition to your April lesson plans. As the pace of the school year accelerates during the spring months, your students will thrive on the consistency of a homework routine. This will help them review important math and literacy concepts in preparation for the long summer break.

April Homework Ideas for Kindergarten

There are so many fun homework ideas for kindergarten, especially for the spring months when there are so many skills that students can review! With so many options, it can be a challenge to choose the best activities for April kindergarten homework.

That’s why I’ve decided to narrow it down for you! I’m going to share some examples of the homework activities I like to use with kindergarten students during the month of April.

Phonemic Awareness

It’s never too late in the year to practice phonemic awareness skills! A strong foundation in letter sounds will help students become confident and fluent readers.

A flower-themed digraph practice worksheet

In this homework activity, students will identify the beginning digraph for a variety of words. They can practice listening closely for the /sh/ and /ch/ digraphs. Hearing the difference between these digraphs will be especially helpful to students as they spell.

An umbrella themed short vowel identification activity

Students can also practice listening for vowel sounds with this activity. Students will identify the picture on each umbrella and then determine which vowel sound they hear in the word. Once they’ve identified the vowel sound, they will color the umbrella based on the code. This will also give students some extra practice with color word identification!

Word Building

Homework activities can also help students practice word building in many different ways. This gives students the chance to apply their phonics knowledge as they spell a variety of words.

A rain-themed word building activity

In this word building activity, students will use raindrop letter cards to build words to match the picture on each cloud. The seasonal activity can bring some extra engagement and motivation to word building practice!

Sight Words

You can add sight word practice to your homework routine with engaging spring-themed activities. In this example, students will rearrange the scrambled letters on the raindrops to spell a variety of sight words. They can practice letter formation skills as they write each sight word on the correct umbrella.

Counting

Counting is a skill that students can practice with engaging homework activities. By using a variety of themed activities, you can keep students motivated to practice counting.

For example, April showers can serve as inspiration for a fun counting activity! Students can count the raindrops under each cloud and then write the number on the cloud. Once they’ve done that, they can color the cloud that has more raindrops.

Teen Numbers

Students can also practice teen numbers during their homework routine. This bee-themed activity is a great example! Students will count base ten blocks and match the card to the matching teen number. This is a great way for students to visualize that teen numbers are a combination of one ten and some ones.

Graphing

Fun graphing activities are also a fun option for homework practice in April! You can add a spring twist to graphing practice like this homework activity. Students can count a variety of insects and graph the results. Then they can analyze the results, identifying which insect had the most and which had the least.

More Ways to Use Kindergarten Homework Printables

If you don’t use printable homework as part of your daily routine, there are other ways that you can use these low-prep, time-saving resources. These engaging seasonal worksheets can bring additional literacy and math review to your spring lesson plans. Here are a few examples:

  • Morning Work: Since these homework activities are intended to review skills that students have already learned, they are able to complete these printables independently. This makes these worksheets perfect for morning work! Students are able to sit down and get right to work when they arrive in the morning.
  • Centers: For the same reason, you can repurpose homework printables for literacy and math centers! They are easy to prep and the seasonal activities keep students engaged in this independent skill practice.
  • Early Finishers: You can also prep these homework printables to keep students engaged and on track while they wait for the next classroom activity to begin. You could have a few options available or you could print and assemble early finisher packets that students can keep in their desks or cubbies. They’ll be easy for students to pull out whenever they have a few extra minutes to spare.

No matter how you decide to use these homework printables, your students will be able to review important skills with engaging activities.
