Using Kindergarten Homework in February
February is an interesting month in kindergarten! The winter months are coming to an end and students are eagerly awaiting Valentine’s Day. There are also other special days to celebrate in February, including Groundhog Day, Presidents Day, and the 100th day of school.
With so much going on, a homework routine can bring some much-needed consistency to the month. Here are a few reasons why February homework can be so helpful in kindergarten:
- Review Academic Skills: Students have learned a LOT by February! The list of skills to review is very long, so it’s helpful to have a homework routine for some of this practice.
- Have Seasonal Fun: Themed homework printables are an easy way to incorporate some seasonal engagement to the daily routine.
- Maintain Consistency: We all know important consistency is in the kindergarten classroom, but it can be tricky to keep students on track through the winter months. A homework routine is an easy way to maintain consistency with your students.
Ideas for February Kindergarten Homework
It can be challenging to decide which of many skills to review with your students in February. Choosing developmentally appropriate homework tasks is important, so students and their families aren’t overwhelmed by this routine. Here are some ideas of the literacy and math skills you can review through your homework routine.
Sight Word Recognition
By February, students have been able to learn many different phonics patterns to help them decode words. They need plenty of repetition in order to start recognizing words by sight. The homework routine can give your students the opportunity they need to practice reading words in an engaging way.

For example, students will love this find-and-color homework activity with a Valentine twist. Students will use the code as they read the word in each heart and fill it in with the correct color. This is great practice with sight word recognition and encourages students to practice identifying common high frequency words.
Writing
In addition to reading, students can also practice writing during their February homework routine. By February, students are growing in confidence with letter formation. They are ready to practice writing words!

This Valentine-themed sight word activity gives students the chance to review letter formation. Students will take the scrambled letters on each envelope and rearrange them to create a sight word. There is a word bank on the top of the paper to help students identify each scrambled word. Not only is this great sight word practice, but it also helps students practice letter formation.
Sentence Building
As students become more confident with their writing skills, they’re ready to practice building their own sentences for homework!

For example, in this activity students will use the two words provided to write a sentence about the picture. This gives students the chance to practice sentence conventions like capitalization and punctuation as they write about each picture. The lines provided also serve as a visual reminder of proper letter formation for students as they write.
Patterns
Your homework routine can also give students the chance to review a variety of math skills. For example, students can practice creating patterns of various types. They can color in rows of hearts to match each given pattern type. Coloring activities like this are also an easy way to add more fine motor practice to the homework routine!

Addition and Subtraction
Students can also practice addition and subtraction skills as they complete daily homework. First, students could practice modeling subtraction by crossing out the given number of hearts and writing the number of hearts that are left. This is a great way to review subtraction with students!

Another way that students can practice subtraction is to match numbered hearts to the correct equations. Cutting and pasting the numbers to the paper also helps students practice their scissor skills!

Since students have had a chance to learn about addition and subtraction by February, this is a good opportunity for some mixed review.

In this activity, students can look at a variety of number sentences written on hearts and determine if the sentences are true or false. Once they have decided if the number sentence is true, students can paste it into the appropriate column on the homework page. This is a fun way for students to review addition and subtraction with one activity.
More Ways to Use Homework Printables in February
If you don’t use homework printables in your classroom, you can still use these low-prep printables for review in other ways. Since these activities are reviewing skills that students have already learned, they are perfect to use for independent work in the classroom. For example, these printables are great for morning work, centers, or early finishers when students need to work with minimal assistance. These printables are also a great option to have on hand for sub plans or flex time in the classroom.
