My wonderful kindergarten class just finished their 3rd week of school! I can’t believe how fast it has gone by! We have been working hard, having fun, and learning so much each day. They have really started to build their stamina at being at school all day long. (They were very sleepy the second half of the day for the first 2 weeks of school.)
Here are some highlights from week 3 of kindergarten:
Sight Words: this week we focused on the sight word “the”
We traced the word “the” with fruit loops! We got to eat the left overs too 🙂
I passed out large letters to each student: “t”, “h”, “e”. When I would say go, they had to walk around the room and find other students with the correct letters to make the word “the” and they would stand together to show me their word. (This went WAY better than expected, but with LOTS of modeling of the correct and wrong way to do it.)
I displayed our sight word book of the week on the pocket chart. This is a mini reader that I created called “I See Animals”. We focused on our “Owl Eyes” reading strategy this week, which is when we look at the pictures to help us read words that we don’t know.
Once we have done lots of practice reading on our pocket chart: modeled reading, finding sight words, reading strategies, choral reading, echo reading, I give each student their own book, which is the same as what they have been practicing on the pocket chart.

I have them do a picture walk and then go through each page of the book to circle the sight word of the week with a marker. This week our sight word was: “the”, so I had the kids circle “the” on each page.
Grab this book as a FREEBIE! or Click on the pictures for this FREEBIE!
You can get 31 sight word books HERE!
We practiced reading our mini books as a whole group, then boys only, girls only, choral reading, echo reading, and we got to use our whisper phones!
Pete the Cat: Our story of the week was “Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes”. We focused on retelling the story. I was beyond impressed with how well everyone did!
This is our classroom Pete the Cat that we love! His shoes change and we practiced changing his shoes to help us retell the story.
Here is our retelling anchor chart for the week:
We made Pete the Cat of course! You can grab this Pete the Cat Craft Template HERE
We also wrote about shoes that we love!
We finished the week by doing “Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes” retelling page.
Math: We did ‘All About the Number 2’ this week. We learned a variety of ways to show the number two.
Here are 2 mini reader FREEBIES all about the number 2!
You can grab ALL of these math
activities we did for the numbers 1-10 HERE.
Can’t believe we are starting September next week! Have a WONDERFUL labor day weekend! 🙂
