The holidays might be over, but there is still plenty of winter fun to be had in kindergarten! Using seasonal activities to create a thematic unit can be a great way to keep students engaged in important skill practice. In this post, I’m sharing some of my favorite snowman activities for kindergarten that can be used for a fun unit study!
Snowman Literacy Activities for Kindergarten
Beginning Sounds
Your students will love building their own snowmen with this fun beginning sounds sort! They will put the correct pictures below the snowman with the matching letter.
Another fun way to practice beginning sounds is with this fun hands-on activity! Students will add popsicle stick arms to each snowman by matching the correct letter to each picture. If you’d like this free snowman activity, fill out the form below and it will be delivered straight to your inbox!
CVC Word Practice
Lift-the-flap activities are always a hit in kindergarten, and this snowman activity is no exception! Students will match CVC words with the picture on each snowman, then attach the word flap to create a fun flip-up activity. After completing this worksheet, students can use it for self-correcting CVC word reading practice!
Word Building
Snowman Melt is a fun hangman-inspired game with a wintery twist! Students will use the letter board to help them guess the words. If they guess an incorrect letter, one piece of the snowman will be taken away. The goal is to build the correct word before the snowman disappears!
Snowmen At Night
A snowman unit wouldn’t be complete without reading “Snowmen at Night” by Caralyn Buehner. There are many engaging literacy activities that you can do with your students after reading this clever snowman picture book!
First, your students can practice making text-to-self connections by thinking about how they are similar to snowmen and how they differ.
Then students can write about what they would do if they were a snowman at night. This cute writing activity looks great on a winter bulletin board!
Next, your students can come up with their own snowman main character to include in a story! After choosing a name for their snowman, students will use a graphic organizer to map out what the main character will do in their story.
Finally, your students will write their own snowman at night story, complete with a snowman craftivity for the front cover.
Snowmen All Year
After reading about snowmen at night, your students will love reading “Snowmen All Year” by Caralyn Buehner. This story can inspire even more fun snowman writing projects!
First, your students can complete a short writing activity with a sentence frame. Students will complete and illustrate a sentence about what they would do if they had a snowman all year.
Then your students can use a story organizer to draw pictures of what they would do with their snowman in each season of the year.
After completing the organizer, your students can assemble their writing into this adorable 3D snowman craft!
Text-to-Text Connections
Once your students have had a chance to read two different snowman books, they can practice making text-to-text connections between the stories. One fun way to compare and contrast these stories is with a snowman-shaped Venn diagram!
Snowman Math Activities for Kindergarten
The snowman fun doesn’t have to stay in your ELA block. There are many different ways that you can incorporate snowmen into your math practice.
Decomposing Numbers
If your students could use more practice with decomposing numbers, you’ll definitely want to try these hands-on activities!
Your students can add candy buttons to a snowman in various combinations to show the different ways to decompose a given number. Another fun way to do this is with beads on pipe cleaner! Students can slide some of the beads on the top snowball, leaving the rest on the bottom snowball. Then they will record these number combinations.
Another fun way to practice decomposing numbers is with a shake and spill activity. Students will start with a given number of marshmallows in a cup and then spill them onto a snowman mat. They will record how many marshmallows landed on the snowman and how many did not. This is a great way for students to the see the parts of a whole.
Snowman Addition Activities
Your students can continue to explore parts of a whole as they complete addition activities. First, students can add buttons to two different snowmen and then model these quantities with an addition sentence. There are different mats and recording sheets that you can use to best support your students.
Students can also practice addition with a button-themed mini reader! Students can practice reading color words as they add the correct number of buttons to each snowman.
Another fun addition activity that your students will love is creating a snowman family! After drawing their snowman family on a piece of paper, they will use addition to model how many different items they see in their snowman family.
Finally, students can practice solving addition sentences with a hands-on snowman addition worksheet. Each snowman hat contains a sum that students will match to the snowman with the corresponding equation.
