We all know that students learn in many different ways, and this is especially true in kindergarten! Every school year begins with a group of students who have had a wide range of previous learning experiences. Some students have attended multiple years of preschool and know most of the alphabet. For other students, this is the first time they have stepped inside of a classroom. When it comes to learning the alphabet, it’s important to provide students with a variety of practice activities. This helps students learn the letters and sounds in a way that works best for them. Keep reading for some of my favorite alphabet practice activities that will keep your students excited about learning letters and sounds!
An important step in mastering letter names and sounds is to actually say them! A great way to invite conversation about letters is to have students wear letter hats. As they wear these hats around the school or to end-of-day pickup, people will want to know more about them. This gives students the chance to talk about letters!
I have created these fun letter hats for each letter of the alphabet. Students can practice letter formation with rainbow writing and by tracing. Students will also be able to choose from a set of pictures to find the ones that begin with that letter sound. After completing and assembling the hat, students will be so excited to show them off! Crafts are an essential part of the preschool and kindergarten curriculum. As students create crafts, they are practicing fine motor skills, improving hand strength, and learning how to follow directions. I love that alphabet crafts take it one step further and give students another opportunity to talk about letters and sounds.
In the set of alphabet crafts that I have created, there is a letter-shaped craft for each of the uppercase and lowercase letters. When students complete each craft, they can practice the letter name and sound as they talk about what they are making. These crafts also come with letter tracing for even more fine motor practice! Another way to help students get excited about learning the alphabet is to create a book for each letter. After completing each book, students will be excited to take them home and share their creations with family and friends! As students flip through their books, they will also be practicing concepts of print by holding the book right-side-up, turning pages, and identifying the cover.
Since these books often have multiple pages and activities, they make a great ongoing activity to supplement your daily ELA activities. Students can work on these books during morning work time, small group rotations, or as a fast finisher activity.

Since alphabet practice begins at the very beginning of the school year, printable alphabet practice activities can help students grow accustomed to following directions for written activities. Just remember that printable worksheets don’t have to be dull! They can utilize cutting, matching, puzzles, lift-the-flap and more!

Another thing that is true in most kindergarten classrooms is that these young students love to use technology! That’s why it can be a great idea to channel that interest into digital alphabet practice. Students can learn how to navigate technology for learning activities as they practice identifying letters. Digital alphabet activities are perfect for morning work, centers, and fast finisher activities.

Alphabet centers are an excellent way to add many different alphabet practice activities to your classroom! Each center activity can help students practice letters and sounds in a different way. For example, I have created a set of alphabet centers that helps students practice letter identification, upper and lower case letter matching, beginning sounds, letter building, and more!
By using a variety of activities, students will be more likely to stay engaged in the process of mastering the alphabet!
