One thing I love to use year after year is themed centers. I can never get enough center activities and always want to come back from winter break with some fun and hands-on centers activities. One center activity that continues to be a favorite year after year is this snowman beginning sounds activity. It’s the perfect way to continue practicing beginning sounds. If you enjoy using hands-on activities, this Snowman Beginning Sounds Activity is perfect for your classroom!
What I love about this activity is that it can be used in so many ways. You can add this to your centers, morning tubs, as an early finisher, for at-home practice, small groups, and more!
Your students will have a blast and lots of laughs building snowmen while also practicing matching the pictures on the snowmen to the correct beginning sound letters.
To use this snowman beginning sounds freebie, print the snowmen in color or black and white. Both options are included. If you have a laminator handy, I suggest laminating the snowmen and you will be able to reuse them for years!
Grab some popsicle sticks and a marker. Write each letter of the alphabet on the popsicle sticks. I like to put an uppercase letter on one side and a lowercase letter on the other side. Make a slit on the dotted line of the snowmen in order for the popsicle stick to slide through.
I have included a kid-friendly ‘I Can’ poster that you can add with the activity for students to refer to in order to be able to do the activity independently. I also included a beginning sounds worksheet that you can have students complete to show their work and for accountability. Print the poster and make copies of the beginning sounds worksheet.
Now let’s have fun! Your students will pick a snowman and say the name of the picture. Then, they will determine the beginning sound letter of the picture and find the popsicle stick with that letter. Now, students will slide the popsicle stick through both slits. The snowman will look like it has arms! From here, you can have students record the beginning sound letter on their recording sheet or you can have them build the next beginning sound snowman.
If your students have their beginning sounds mastered, you can give them a challenge by having them place the correct ending sound letter to each snowman. You will most likely need to make a new set of popsicle sticks for this ending sounds activity.
