Winter break has come to an end, alarms are turned back on, and the fast-paced teaching life is back in action! After some much deserved time off, it can be a bit hard to get back into the swing of things for teachers and the students! I like to hit the ground running with some winter activities for kindergarten! The reason for this is because there is HUGE growth that happens from now until the rest of the school year in both reading and math.
I also like to include a lot of winter activities during this season because there are so many hands-on and engaging activities that really appeal to your little learners.

This time of year is so rewarding! You have worked so hard on many foundations and basics during the first half of the school year. Now it is time for them to take all of that knowledge and grow so much as a learner!
With this huge growth spurt about to take place, it is always fun to plan some fun, hands-on, and engaging winter activities for kindergarten.
Let’s start with some of my favorite winter read alouds that I like to incorporate into my math and literacy activities.
I absolutely love to use thematic units. There are so many reasons why using thematic units can benefit your learners.
I can go on and on about the benefits of thematic units, but I will save that for another day!
In each of my units, I include a unit at-a-glance where I give you a plan on how you can use the activities each day of the week. I provide this to help you plan out the activities with a good flow for the week. However, you can absolutely come up with your own plan!

The last unit I am going to share is so big that I like to take 2 weeks to complete. This penguins unit is full of nonfiction and fiction activities all about penguins.

I know a lot of time we don’t like to use printables, but let’s be real. Printables truly are important to use in the classroom.
Students can strengthen their fine motor skills, logical thinking, and motivate them to work without the help of a teacher.
Printables are especially good to use when they are engaging, interactive, and include many skills on one page.
I like to include printables for morning work, early finishers, homework, extra practice at home, small groups, independent work, and more!
Some of my favorite winter printables are:
Students practice writing a specific skill that you choose. Then, they use the color code to color the correct squares. When all of the squares are colored correctly a mystery picture is revealed!
What I love about these winter mystery pictures is that they are editable and gives you tons of options to choose what skill you want to add for your class. You can add sight words, letters, numbers, spelling words, and more.
All you do is fill out the form with the information you want and the mystery pictures will be created instantly!
I have even had adults enjoy doing these mystery pictures because they are excited to see what the mystery picture will be!
I notice huge interest that many of my students have are puzzles. They love problem-solving and most of all the suspense of puzzles.
I love creating mystery pictures and mystery puzzles because the engagement of these activities is so great that students can never get enough! They always want more!
These free winter mystery puzzles includes 6 different puzzles where students practice a specific math or literacy skill. The skills included are beginning sounds, ending sounds, CVC words, addition, subtraction, and ten frames.
Here is an example of the beginning sounds mystery puzzle.
Students place the letters on the picture that has the same beginning letter sound. When all of the letters are placed correctly, a mystery image is revealed! Students also get to record their work to show their understanding of the skill.

These fun Connect the Dots printables are great to add to your winter activities for kindergarten and little learners. You can choose from students practicing numbers to 25, uppercase letters, or lowercase letters.
There are 6 different connect the dot pictures and different skills to choose from for each picture. First, trace the numbers or letters. Then connect the numbers or letters in order from 1-25, A-Z, or a-z to reveal a winter picture!
