Candy Corn Tasting

A candy corn taste test is a fun way to celebrate Halloween in a kindergarten classroom, especially because there are so many fun activities to go along with it!

This particular activity has a small cost since you will need a variety of different candy corn to share with your students. However, I have provided some free downloads to help you make the most of your candy corn taste testing!

*The Indian candy corn is now known as Harvest candy corn. I have updated the activities to show the word Harvest.

Our Favorite Candy Corn – Class Graph

These days, there are many different types of candy corn for your students to taste test! I like to use Brach’s Autumn Mix, which has three different types of candy corn in one bag.  Then you can add a bag of caramel candy corn to the mix! After letting your students taste one of each type of candy corn, they can choose a card that represents their favorite.  This card will become their vote as they place it on a class graph.

After completing the graph, you can practice one-to-one correspondence as you count the results together as a class!  Then you can have a class discussion about concepts like more, fewer, most, and least. You can point out to your students that they can easily compare the number of votes by looking at the column heights. This class graph will be helpful for your students as they complete the next part of the taste test activity!

Once your class has completed a graph together, your students can practice their own graphing skills!  These individual worksheets are perfect for students to learn how to fill in a graph independently.  They can use crayons or pencils to create their own copy of the class graph.

This graphing worksheet also has space for students to summarize the data by writing which candy corn options were most and least popular.  Your students can also represent the data with tally marks and numbers. This is a great number sense practice activity for young learners!

Candy Corn Craft

What candy corn activity would be complete without a craft?  Once students have graphed the class candy corn tasting results, they can create a craft to show off their personal favorites! These candy corn craft templates can be used in many different ways, but I prefer to use q-tips with paint. (Here is a link to the craft paint that I like.)  Painting with q-tips really slows students down and encourages them to practice their pincer grasp! As they fill in their chosen template with small dots of paint, they are also improving their hand-eye coordination.

While your candy corn craft is drying, it’s time for the final part of the candy corn tasting!

My Favorite Candy Corn – Writing Activity

Now it’s time for your students to write about their own personal results of the candy corn taste test! Students can write and illustrate a sentence about their favorite type of candy corn. This activity will help students practice using correct letter formation, capitalization, and punctuation.

Once the writing is complete and the craft is dry, it’s time to put it all together!  These crafts, paired with the student writing, look great on a Halloween bulletin board!

Halloween Roll and Cover

Roll and cover activities are another fun way to bring some seasonal fun to math practice!  This activity can be adjusted to meet the needs of your students by using either one or two dice. Students can roll the dice, count up the dots, and then cover the corresponding number on their mat. The game continues until all of the dots have been covered.

You can make these mats reusable by laminating them and using either dry-erase markers or small manipulatives.  For an extra festive touch, you can use Halloween manipulatives to cover the numbers, like googly eyes, plastic spiders, Halloween erasers, or even leftover candy corn from your taste test!

Halloween Gift for Students

The activities above are a great way to celebrate Halloween in your classroom!  If you want to end the day with a special surprise for your students, be sure to grab these free Halloween gift tags. They are easy to prepare for your students: Just download and print these tags on colorful paper, then cut them into strips. Then you simply attach these tags to plastic fangs, which you can find on Amazon.

You can either give this to your students as a stand-alone gift or you can attach it to a gift bag with other Halloween goodies.  Either way, your students will love receiving something special from you on Halloween.  You can save these gifts to send home at the very end of the day, or you can have your students open them in class so that you can take a funny picture with everyone wearing their fangs!
